Three for Fort (09/15/07)
FRHS football
VERSAILLES, Ohio - An explosion of second quarter points, and a big effort from the offensive line, has the Fort Recovery Indians in unfamiliar territory.
Fort Recovery, which has had just one winning season since starting its football program in the early 1990s, improved to 3-1 on the season - and 2-1 in Midwest Athletic Conference play - with an impressive 33-20 victory Friday night over the Versailles Tigers.
The Indians, who have equaled the best start in school history, used two second quarter touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Greg Kahlig and a scoring run by Frank Thien in the period to take a 27-7 lead into halftime.
The host Tigers scored in the opening two minutes of the third period, but Fort Recovery responded with yet another TD toss from Kahlig, and held Versailles to just what turned out to be a meaningless score late in the third then hung on for the victory.
Fort coach Brent Niekamp said the stars of the game Friday were members of the offensive line.
"They played awesome. They made huge holes and gave the quarterback time to throw," Niekamp said.
The Indians, who racked up 434 yards of total offense - 235 yards via the pass and 199 on the ground - are off to their best start ever in the MAC. They will return home to Barrenbrugge Athletic Park Friday for another MAC matchup against Anna.
Two of Kahlig's touchdown passes Friday were to Michael Trobridge, and both were 26 yards.
Kahlig posted solid numbers, completing 13-of-19 attempts for 221 yards, the three touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Trobridge pulled in five passes for 86 yards and the two scores, while Thien had four catches for 75 yards. Toby Metzger also caught a touchdown pass in the second quarter for the Indians.
Fort's ground attack was also solid, picking up 199 yards on 41 attempts. Matt Braun led the way with 82 yards on 21 caries, while Thien had nine rushes for 47 yards and Kahlig carried seven times for 35 yards.
Turnovers, or lack thereof, were a big part of the story for the Indians, who lost one fumble but picked off Versailles QB Jon Richard twice.
The offense for the Indians struck quickly, as Braun capped off a game-opening, six-play drive with a 6-yard scoring run just 1:39 into the game.
Versailles' Richard answered at 4:35 of the opening quarter with a 24-yard scoring run, setting up a second period that saw the Indians score 20 unanswered points.
Thien started the onslaught with a 2-yard run at 11:09, and Kahlig tossed a 26-yard TD strike to Trobidge with 2:50 to play in the first half.
After stopping Versailles on downs, the Indians took a punt and marched downfield, with the big play of the drive coming on a 37-yard pass from Kahlig to Bobby Rammel.
With just 13 seconds left in the second quarter, Kahlig's 9-yard scoring pass to Metzger gave the Indians a 27-7 lead.[[In-content Ad]]
