FRHS football
ith 12 minutes left to play, they were in pretty good position to come away with a hard-fought conference road win.
But a flurry of fourth quarter points - including a momentum-swinging play on special teams - left the Fort Recovery Indians wondering what happened Friday night.
Host Versailles, trailing Fort by a 20-14 margin through three quarters, outscored the Indians 23-0 in the fourth on its way to a 37-20 victory.
The Tigers, who took the lead less than two minutes into the final period, broke things open on a 60-yard punt return from Jon Murphy with 9:09 left to play, then added an insurance touchdown with a little more than 4 minutes to play.
Fort Recovery, which drops to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in Midwest Athletic Conference play, will be home at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park Friday against the St. Henry Redskins. Versailles improves to 2-5 on the season.
Fort largely relied on aerial offense in Friday's game, with Greg Kahlig completing 17-of-32 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown.
The Tribe's Frank Thien accounted for all three of his team's scores Friday, hauling in two TD passes from Kahlig, and scoring once on a run. Thien, who caught three passes for 56 yards, also ran the ball 9 times for 45 yards.
Other top receivers on a balanced night for Fort Recovery included Craig Tobe (4-46 yards), Nathan Keller (3-66), Cody Fiely (3-45) and Michael Gaerke (3-17).
Versailles racked up 250 yards of rushing offense and 312 total yards while controlling the ball for nearly 28 minutes.
Fort Recovery had 279 yards in total offense.
The Tigers' Murphy opened the game in a big way for the host team with a 70-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes off the game clock. He added another score from 4 yards out at 5:24 of the first before Fort's Thien answered with a 17-yard run at 2:52 of the first.
A 27-yard Kahlig-to-Thien TD pass at 1:12 of the second quarter brought the Indians even, and they took the lead at 4:27 of the third quarter on Thien's 1-yard score.[[In-content Ad]]
