Time to help with Angel Tree (10/07/2008)
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
We have had many inquiries from families who have helped the Jay County Angel Tree Project in the past. Question like, "when are you going to start taking applications?" or "are you going to have the Angel Tree again this year?" Our answers to these questions are "yes." As long as the community supports it, the Jay County Angel Tree Project will continue.
Our applications are out in the schools now, and also at Community and Family Services Inc. on South Wayne Street. Anyone who qualifies may fill one out and drop it off at CFS.
Remember the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child"? Well, it takes a giving community like Jay County to make this project not only continue but grow like it has over the years.
This year we are begging for your help with the Angel Tree. Last year we were able to help more than 750 kids receive a nicer Christmas. Plus we gave out more than 65 food boxes for the elderly in our community. Our families also receive food boxes. People like you and your generosity make all this possible.
Red Gold and FCC have already donated boxes and 3M has given us tape. People in the community willing to help us sort, wrap and organize are waiting to get this project underway. Not to mention my six "angels" who put their lives on hold to help me pull all this together for our community during one of the busiest times of the year.
Now comes the part you are waiting for. If you can help this year, we would greatly appreciate it.
There are many ways you can do so. You can adopt an Angel off our Angel Tree at the customer service areas in Wal-Mart or First Merchants Bank in Portland; adopt a family (Wayne Township Trustee's office; or make a monetary donation to Angel Tree, P.O. Box 515, Portland, IN, 47371.
For more information, call me at (260) 726-2148, Cathy Smith at (260) 726-8268 or Denise Brewster at (260) 726-4670.
Hope to hear from you soon.
In the spirit of giving.

Amazing
To the editor:
The proposal to "bail out" beleaguered financial institutions quite simply amazes me. The very day that The President went on Prime Time T.V. programming and made this request, our "honorable" Congress had just passed a multi billion dollar spending bill that was simply a sort of stop gap measure to tide over the Federal Gov't to the end of the fiscal year, which incidentally is the end of September.
To match this "going to the trough, like hogs to slop" mentality, the big three automakers are asking the Fed for countless billions in federal aid to produce more energy efficient and alternative energy powered vehicles to remain competitive.
Airlines have asked for aid to stay afloat in the wake of rising fuel costs.
We, as taxpayers, are already on the hook for in excess of $9 trillion in debt as we speak, BEFORE any of this other recently proposed money even comes into play.
Federal Reserve Chairman Marriner Eccles was quoted as saying the following. " The U.S. economy is like a poker game where the chips have become concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, and the other fellows can stay in the game, only by borrowing. When their credit runs out, the game will stop."
Mr Eccles was the Chairman from 1931-1934. He was somewhat prophetic was he not? GAME OVER!
How many chips are you holding?
Sincerely,
James D. Fulks III
