ST. MARYS, Ohio - What a way to end the old year.
Fort Recovery battled through two overtimes Saturday night in a slugfest with St. Marys, coming out on top 80-76 at the end of an exhausting see-saw contest.
Clint Tobe, who led the Indians with 23 points, was perfect when it counted at the free throw line - hitting 6 of 6 in the second OT - to give Fort Recovery the hard-fought win.
While Fort Recovery divided its scoring among Tobe, Aaron Kahlig who had 16, Tony Diller who had 13, Toby Metzger who had 11, Greg Kahlig who had 9, and Bobby Rammel who had 8, St. Marys relied almost exclusively on a pair of players who racked up almost two-thirds of their team's points.
Adam Johns scored 25 for St. Marys, hitting 11 of 20 from the field, and Aaron Pfeffenberger scored 20, hitting 7 of 14 from 2-point range and 6 of 11 from 3-point range.
The Indians jumped out to a first quarter lead of 17-7 and extended it to 29-20 at the half, but St. Marys dominated the third, outscoring Fort Recovery 21-10.
That made it 45-39 in St. Marys' favor going into the final quarter.
The Indians bounced back in style, outscoring the host team 21-15 in the fourth, but Johns tied it up at 60-60 in the final seconds.
It was still knotted up - 68-68 - at the end of the first OT.
Rammel started off the second overtime with a 3-pointer to put the Indians up 71-68, but Johns responded with a field goal to make it 71-70.
Tobe then hit a jump shot to make it 73-70.
A foul by Rammel sent Jonathan Brenneman to the line for Fort Recovery, but he missed one of two shots, making it 73-71 Fort Recovery.
A St. Marys foul sent Metzger to the line, where he hit one of two, making it 74-71. Pfeffenberger then fouled Tobe, who made both shots to put the Indians up 76-71.
But a 3-pointer by Pfeffenberger put St. Marys back in it with 24 seconds on the clock, cutting Fort Recovery's lead to 76-74.
With seconds ticking off the clock, St. Marys was forced to foul, but in two more trips to the line Tobe didn't miss a single opportunity.
He hit 4 more foul shots, a total of 6 in a row in the second OT, to seal the win.
For the game, Tobe hit 7 of 13 from the field and 9 of 10 at the line, including the 6 that pushed the Indians over the top.
Kahlig hit 8 of 10 from the field, and Diller hit 6 of 12. As a team, the Indians shot better than 52 percent for the game and better than 57 percent in overtime play.
