Tox Away Day is set for Sept. 14

Jay County Solid Waste District

Jay County Solid Waste District is ready for Tox Away Day.
The 12th annual event, which is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 14 in the East Jay Middle School parking lot, was discussed Monday at the regular meeting of the district’s board of directors. It will run in conjunction with a free dump day for county residents at Jay County Landfill.
Tox Away Day offers Jay County residents the opportunity to dispose of hazardous materials.
“I wanted to say a big thanks to (financial director) Freda (Corwin) because she’s picked up the slack,” said JCSWD educator Bettie Jacobs, who had been out of the office this summer after undergoing surgery. “She’s got Tox Away Day ready to go.”
New on the list of items that will be accepted this year are old medicine and sharp medical implements. Medicine must be brought in its original container, and “sharps” should be in a container such as a coffee can or plastic jar with a lid.
Other items that will be accepted free of charge are: oil-based paints, stains and varnishes, paint thinners, adhesives, fuels (gasoline), oil, car wax, solvents, aerosols, batteries, asbestos, pesticides, fertilizer, propane tanks and pool chemicals. Residents may also bring appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, dishwashers, televisions, computers and microwaves.
Four car/truck tires and two tractor tires will be accepted for free, but residents will be charged for each additional tire.
Gary Schaublin, operations manager at Jay County Landfill, and the board agreed to have the landfill open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14 for a free dump day. That is an extension of two hours from previous years to allow residents more time to dispose of materials at EJMS and the landfill.
However, the facility will cut back its free days to one per year from the previous two.
“What we want to do is incorporate it with the Tox Away Days,” said Schaublin. “That way when they get done with the Tox Away they can come out to us and drop off whatever else is left.”
Bryant will also hold its fall clean-up day Sept. 14. There will be an extra trash pickup for household solid waste, excluding hazardous materials, leaves and demolition debris, beginning at 8 a.m.
In other business Monday, the board:
•Heard the educator’s report from Jacobs. She will attend a free training seminar for educators Thursday in Nashville.
Jacobs also plans to meet with the Jay County High School Earth Club in order to discuss projects the two organizations may be able to work on together.
•Approved payment of claims of $11,020.06 for July 23 through Aug. 26. Those payments leave the board with total assets of $258,405.90.
•Decided board members Faron Parr, Milo Miller Jr. and Jim Zimmerman, who also serve as Jay County Commissioners, will represent the JCSWD at Jay County Council’s budget hearing Sept. 11.
•Voted to renew the district’s advertisement in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church (Dunkirk) weekly bulletin at a cost of $80 for the year.
•Tabled a request from Jay Community Center for a donation. The board plans to look into purchasing a banner advertisement to be displayed at JCC.[[In-content Ad]]
