Tox-Away day set Saturday (10/8/04)
Hazardous waste disposal to be held at JCHS parking lot
A chance to safely dispose of paint, motor oil, chemicals or a long list of other hazardous materials sitting around the garage or home is coming Saturday.
The third annual Tox-Away Day, sponsored by the Jay County Solid Waste District, will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jay County High School.
The event, which has been held the first two years at a city lot in Portland, will be in a lot north and east of the football field.
A long list of toxic and hazardous waste may be disposed at no cost. There is a limit on some items such as flammable liquids, pesticides, herbicides and tires.
Kay Hayes, the director of the local solid waste district, said this morning she is looking forward to another good turnout.
“I would have hoped that (volume) would have gone down, but it hasn’t. People tend to hold onto it for a year because they know they can get rid of it free. We have had so many calls. I think it’s going to be a fairly good volume,” said Hayes.
Hayes, who also helped with similar programs under the now-defunct three-county Mideast Indiana Solid Waste District, said some of the most common items disposed are paint, tires and appliances.
There is no charge for disposal of up to four car or two truck or tractor tires. There is a charge of $1.50 each for each tire in excess of four, $2.50 for each additional truck tire, and $15 for each additional tractor tire. There is a $1.50 charge for tires left on the rim.
Virtually all appliances will be accepted — including refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners still containing refrigerant.
A decision by the JCSWD board to accept computers, appliances and tires at its first Tox-Away day two years caused a big increase in volume as compared to previous collection efforts by the MISWD, Hayes said.
“We started allowing them to bring their tires and that brought tires out of the woodwork,” she said.
Items should be left in original containers, with caps and lids tightened. Items should be loaded into vehicles separately and packed tightly.
Here is a list of items that will be accepted:
Oil-base/latex paint, stains and varnishes, paint strippers/thinners, adhesives, chemical waste, fuels (gasoline, kerosene), automotive fluids, oils/oil filters, car wax/polishes and solvents and other toxic solids.
Aerosols, batteries (including car and household), asbestos, pesticides/herbicides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, refrigerators/freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, stoves, washers/dryers, water heaters, dishwashers, computers (monitors, CPUs, keyboards, printers) fluorescent tubes/PCB ballasts and acids.[[In-content Ad]]
