Tribe boys continue non-conference success (01/30/06)

FORT RECOVERY — A night after another disappointing Midwest Athletic Conference loss, the Indians got back in track outside of league play.
Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team improved to 5-3 against non-conference teams, clobbering National Trail Blazers 68-31 at home Saturday night. It was the second straight home victory for the Indians, who lost 53-45 at Marion Local (3-9) Friday.
National Trail (1-14) never had much of a chance after a 20-0 Tribe run early on. Fort Recovery scored the final 11 points of the first quarter and added a 9-0 run to open the second for a 27-4 lead.
It was up 19 at halftime and rolled to a 23-4 advantage in the third quarter to finish off the visiting Blazers, who shot 21 percent in the first half and 33 percent for the game.
Clint Tobe and Travis VanSkyock paced Fort Recovery (5-8) with 17 and 16 points respectively. They combined to shoot 50 percent from the field (13-of-26). Tobe grabbed five rebounds, and VanSkyock finished with three assists and a pair of blocks.
The Indians dominated the glass 34-24, and had just eight turnovers compared to 24 for National Trail.
Tony Diller added nine points, and Luke Bihn had a game-high seven rebounds. Ryan Staugler notched five rebounds and four assists.
The high scorer for the Blazers was Dustin Nutt with nine points. Jacob Eales added seven points.
Junior varsity
National Trail made a run in the second half, but could not overcome a 13-point halftime deficit as the Indians took a 47-42 victory.
Fort Recovery shot 43 percent in the first half while holding the Blazers to 5-of-20 (25 percent) from the field. The teams switched roles after the break — the Indians shot 22 percent and National trail 48 percent — but the home team was able to hang on.
Bobby Rammel paced the victory, going 4-of-6 from the field including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. He also hit all of his four free throws to finish with 15 points.
Aaron Kahlig had 11 points and four assists, and Lucas Staugler grabbed eight rebounds.
Daniel Ballinger hit all of his six field-goal tries and led National trail with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Tyler Little added 12 points.[[In-content Ad]]
