FORT RECOVERY — Home court had not been such an advantage for the Tribe.
In three chances, Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team had suffered two double-digit losses and coughed up a late lead against Minster. But all the Indians did in the second half Saturday night was dominate.
Fort Recovery closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run, then scored 12 straight points in the fourth quarter as it handed the Houston Wildcats just their third loss of the season, 61-48.
“Beating them was nice, just because they were 10-2,” said FRHS coach Brian Patch. “It was against a quality team with great effort all game long. Everyone who came off the bench contributed ... Guys stepped up when they needed to and made big plays.”
Houston (10-3) has been among the top 20 in the Division IV poll voting, but could not keep up with the Indians after taking a 34-33 lead late in the third quarter.
Travis VanSkyock, who finished with a game-high 17 points, immediately hit a 3-pointer to reclaim the lead for good. Clint Tobe followed with a pull-up jumper, VanSkyock scored again off an assist from Ryan Staugler and Tony Diller hit a free throw for a 41-34 lead with one quarter to play.
“The end of the third quarter was big,” said Houston coach John Willoughby. “We didn’t step out on a three — pick-and-roll, we didn’t step out. We turned the inbounds pass over and they went up seven or so at that time. I thought that was a turning point in the game.”
The Wildcats managed to get close again as they scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, but Patch called a timeout and his team caught fire again. It went on a 12-0 run to put the game away, with freshman Toby Metzger scoring the final eight points in the stretch.
Metzger hit seven free throws and scored 11 of his 12 points in the final period.
Heading into the game VanSkyock and Tobe were each averaging double figure scoring, but no other Tribe player was hitting for more than 5.9 points per game. Metzger and Luke Bihn solved that problem.
Bihn joined VanSkyock, Tobe and Metzger in double figures with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He also led the Indians to a 34-23 advantage on the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds.
“Something we had talked about is we had to make sure we established an inside game,” said Patch. “That’s something early on we didn’t do a very good job of. ... (Luke) came through ...
“For us obviously that’s a concern every game is we want to try to pound the board. Tonight we did a pretty good job of it. It was a great boxing out effort as a team. (Luke) did a great job of keeping their guys off the boards.”
Fort Recovery took 10 fewer field-goal attempts than Houston, but shot 10 percent better (50-40). It sealed the game with its best free-throw effort of the season, hitting for 70 percent. Metzger finished 7-of-10 from the line, and VanSkyock was 5-of-6.
VanSkyock also grabbed eight rebounds, and Tobe finished with five boards.
Dan Estes led Houston with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, and Brandon Hughes added 13 points on 6-of-9 from the field. But the rest of the Wildcat squad was just 8-of-32 (25 percent), and managed to hit only 4-of-16 3-pointers.
“I thought we had some open looks, the problem is, we’re not getting the ball inside enough,” said Willoughby. “Our guards just aren’t throwing it inside enough. When you’re not making threes, that’s easy points for the other team. We’re just not throwing it inside enough lately and we’ve got to correct that.”
Houston has now lost three of its last five games after an 8-0 start. Two of those losses have come against Midwest Athletic Conference schools as the Wildcats fell 59-55 to Minster Dec. 30.

Dismal shooting in the second half left Fort Recovery short in a 56-46 loss to the Wildcats.
The Indians trailed by just three points at the half, but fizzled with a six-point third quarter. Half of their second-half points came on free throws as they shot just 6-of-27 (22 percent) after the break.
Three players scored in double figures for Fort Recovery in the loss, led by Aaron Kahlig with 13. He also had six assists.
Lucas Staugler and Wes Kahlig each had 10 points. Eric Lamm grabbed eight rebounds, and Tyler Jutte had seven boards.
Jeremy Howard made each of his six free throws and finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for Houston.

FORT RECOVERY — Curtis Schroer poured in more than half of his team’s points as the Indians topped Houston 33-25.
Schroer had 18 points for Fort Recovery, which was up by three after the third quarter and outscored the Wildcats 11-6 in the final period. He also grabbed six rebounds.
Tom Will finished with seven points and 11 rebounds, and Brent Faller added seven points and six boards.[[In-content Ad]]
