FORT RECOVERY - What would you do?
Brent Niekamp knew, and Greg Kahlig made the choice pay off.
The Fort Recovery Indians, who forced overtime with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, went for the win in OT and got it, defeating the Delphos St. John's Blue Jays in a thriller Friday night.
A dive into the end zone for the game-winning two-point conversion was the capper on a huge game for Kahlig, a sophomore who put school record passing numbers (31-for-54, 375 yards, 4 touchdowns) in the victory.
The Indians, who improve to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in Midwest Athletic Conference play with the 29-28 victory, now have their most MAC wins ever since starting a full league schedule in 1995.
And the latest victory, coming off the heels of a two-point homecoming loss last week to Anna, tasted sweet - especially after the Indians survived a late turnover and a potential game-winning 44-yard field goal try by St. John's as time expired in regulation.
Fort Recovery coach Brent Niekamp, faced with the choice to play for a tie and another overtime or go for the win, went for it and got it when Kahlig dove over for a 2-point conversion - giving the Indians victory and sending the Barrenbrugge Athletic Park crowd into a frenzy.
Kahlig's extra points followed his 4-yard touchdown pass to Toby Metzger on Fort's first offensive possession of overtime, which consists of alternating possessions from the 25-yard line, with each team getting a chance to score.
The Blue Jays (2-4), who had jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead, took the lead again on their first - and, as it turned out, only - overtime possession on a 5-yard run by Tony Reindel. Jordan Rode kicked the PAT to put the Blue Jays up 28-21.
The Indians, who scored and kicked an extra point to tie with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter, faced fourth-and-12, but stayed alive when Greg Kahlig hit Wes Kahlig for a 12-yard pass and a first down.
Greg Kahlig ran for four yards on first down to the 7-yard line, then hit Metzger for the score before diving across the goal line for the conversion and the Fort Recovery victory.
The Indians, who will face arguably their toughest test of the season Friday at Marion Local, had to rally twice against St. John's after going down 13 after 12 minutes of play. Fort took the lead on Kahlig scoring passes of 14 yards to Michael Trobridge for in the second quarter, and six yards to Frank Thien in the third.
Trailing 14-13, St. Johns answered with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Jay Clark to to Jay Leininger at 8:46 of the fourth quarter, and added a 2-point conversion to go up 21-14.
But the Indians had an answer in the persons of Kahlig and Metzger. The pair hooked up on a 15-yard touchdown pass at 2:31 of the fourth, and Mark Mattraw tied the score at 21 with the PAT kick.
The 31 completions for Kahlig shattered the previous school record of 21. His 375 yards passing was also 71 more than the highest single-game total in school history.
Metzger was the biggest benefactor of Kahlig's huge passing night, pulling in 13 balls, one short of the school record, for 160 yards and the two touchdowns. Thien had eight receptions for 58 yards, while Trobidge pulled in six catches for 102 yards.[[In-content Ad]]
