DELPHOS, Ohio - A tough journey through one of the top small-school conferences in the state continued Friday for the Fort Recovery Indians.
Fort, which has dominated competition outside of the Midwest Athletic Conference this season, was outscored 11-4 to close out the first quarter and never fully recovered as the host St. John's Blue Jays scored a 65-54 victory.
The Indians (11-6, 3-5 MAC) will host Mississinawa Valley tonight.
Their only non-conference loss this season came against Jay County.
Although Fort battled back to within four points late in the first half and kept the game close throughout, the key stretch came early, as the host Blue Jays went on an 11-2 run to build an 18-9 advantage.
The Indians' Greg Kahlig, who led all scorers with 31 points in Friday's game, knocked in a jumper to trim the margin to 18-11 after one period. Two more Kahlig baskets cut the score to 18-15 at 5:42 of the second quarter, but the Indians would never get closer than that three-point margin the remainder of the game.
Cameron Hermiller paced St. John's with 17 points.
Teammates Nate Webb and Scott Recker added 13 and 11 points respectively.
Solid shooting was a key to the win, as the Blue Jays hit 49 percent from the field (22-for-45), including 8-for-19 (42 percent) from 3-point range.
The Indians, who got nine points from Craig Tobe, were just 20-for-58 (35 percent) from the floor, including 3-for-20 (14 percent) from behind the 3-point line.
Recker had a game-high 13 rebounds for St. John's, which had a 36-29 advantage on the boards.
Kahlig had a team-best eight boards for Fort, while Toby Metzger pulled down seven rebounds. Frank Thein and Metzger each had six assists.
