FORT RECOVERY - The Indians were coming off a disappointing three-game defeat. The visiting Coldwater Cavaliers lost a five-game heartbreaker Monday.

Both teams were searching for redemption.

Coldwater got it, rallying for a 25-17, 23-25, 24-26, 25-15, 15-11 victory over the Fort Recovery High school volleyball team. The Tribe is still searching for answers.

"We'll probably make some changes to the lineup," said FRHS coach Diana Rammel, whose team has dropped three straight and is 0-4 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. "I just don't know what else to do."

Fort Recovery seemed primed to get out of its funk - it lost in three games Monday to Anna - after going up two games to one Tuesday. Even after the Cavaliers led the entire fourth game, the Tribe was in command in the deciding fifth.

The Indians scored the first four points, getting blocks from Anne Koesters and Nicole Pottkotter and a pair of kills from Kinsey Wenning. Following a Coldwater timeout, they were able to push their lead to 6-1. But the rest of the match belonged to the Cavaliers.

Coldwater pulled to within 6-5 on an Ashley Wermert ace, and eventually evened the score at nine on a kill from Bethany Werling. Maria Wermert immediately followed with a kill to give the Cavaliers the lead for good. They scored seven straight points for a 13-9 lead, and the match ended on an attack error by Kinsey Wenning.

"We sure didn't finish," said Rammel, who couldn't pinpoint why her team stumbled. "I have no idea. I wish I could answer that."

For Coldwater, the victory was sweet salvation after suffering a five-game loss Monday to St. Mary's Memorial.

"I tell ya, we needed that," said Coldwater coach and Fort Recovery graduate Mandy Diller, whose team is now 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. "We had a rough night last night and we needed to come out strong. ... Coming back like that in the fifth game is tough to do. I am just so proud of them.

"For us, the biggest difference is being able to relax. We just get tense. ... If we can just relax ... and get back in that zone, that's the biggest thing."

The evening got off on a sour note for the Indians as Marla Hess pounded home four consecutive aces to start the match. Coldwater finished with 14 aces compared to just three for the Tribe.

Fort Recovery never led in that opening game, but bounced back in the second. They trailed 23-20 in that game, but rallied back behind an ace by Pottkotter, an Anne Koesters block and two Joanna Snyder kills to close with a 5-0 run.

Wenning came up big with two kills and a block late in game three, and Pottkotter finished the Indians' 26-24 triumph with a kill of her own. But Coldwater scored the first five points of game four and never trailed, and then rallied from the game-five deficit for the win.

Hess, who finished with five aces, also had 30 assists.

"Marla was our glue tonight," said Diller. "We needed her.

"She's just everywhere on the floor. She just did it for us."

Maria Wermert had 14 kills, and Brittanie Niekamp followed with eight. Ashley Wermert totaled 17 digs, and Melissa Kahlig had 12 digs.

Pottkotter had team highs of 23 poinst and 15 assists for the Indians. Wenning totaled 13 kills, and Holly Burnswick finished with 11 points and eight kills.

Emily May had 32 digs, Joanna Snyder notched eight kills and Anne Koesters totaled six blocks.

Junior varsity

Carly Staugler led the Indians in points and assists in a 25-20, 20-25, 25-17 victory over Coldwater.

Fort Recovery (5-5, 1-3 MAC) had the lead for most of the third game, and Staugler served it out to a 20-11 advantage. The Indians eventually put the game away on a service error by the Cavaliers.

Staugler finished with 18 assists and 12 points, and Sarah Knapke had nine points and nine digs. Olivia Thien had six kills and two blocks, Kendra Brunswick totaled 11 digs and Lorraine Shier finished with 10 kills.

Freshman

VAN WERT, Ohio - Fort Recovery slipped to .500, dropping two close games in a 25-22, 26-24 defeat to the Van Wert Cougars.

Olivia Schwieterman finished with 17 assists, seven points, one kill and one dig for the Indians (5-5). Kayla Kahlig had eight points and two digs, and Hunter McAbee also scored eight points.

Kara Faller added two kills, and Abby Backs and Gina Braun each had two digs.
