Tribe falls to Wildcats (09/12/2008)
FRHS football
FORT RECOVERY, Ohio - In an up-and-down game, Fort Recovery couldn't get into the end zone and was flattened on defense Friday night as the Indians fell to the Minster Wildcasts, 28-14.
The Tribe stumbled for the second week in a row to a fellow Midwest Athletic Conference opponent in the light rain Friday night. After explosive showings in their first two games, the Indians were unable to produce in the long run while Minster ran all over the Fort defense.
Quarterback Greg Kahlig had a tough time Friday night as he was constantly hurried by the aggressive Minster defense. Kahlig threw four interceptions, three in the second half, and was sacked or hurried repeatedly, which kept the offense quiet during the soggy game. Kahlig threw 50 times on the evening, completing 21 of those for 318 yards but no TDs.
Fort Recovery was led on the ground by Matt Braun, who carried only six times for 42 yards and a touchdown. Craig Tobe was the go-to-receiver for the evening, scooping up 10 receptions for 198 yards and one TD. Frank Thien nabbed another five balls for 54 yards and threw the Tribe's only touchdown.
After Kahlig tossed his first interception on the third play of the game, Fort Recovery came up big with a fourth-down stop at its own 1-yard line to get the ball back and keep the score zeroed out.
The Indians put up the first points of the evening off a 10-yard run by Braun on a good second effort to cross the goal with 2:17 remaining in the first.
Minster responded quickly on a 56-yard catch and run up the middle to even the score with 16 seconds to go in the first quarter.
Fort capitalized on a recovered fumble and turned it into quick points on the pass from Thien to Tobe midway through the second to retake the lead.
The Indians were unable to make another goal line stop before the end of the half as Minster slipped in on a 10-yard corner route to take the game into halftime even.
When the second half began the Indian offense faded fast and the defense was flattened by Minster's running backs. Kahlig tossed his three picks, and the Wildcats went to the air only twice as they added two more rushing TDs that would be the difference.
Minster threw only seven times on the evening, but rushed 56 times for a total of 288 yards. The collection of turnovers helped put the Wildcats up in the game despite being out-produced in total offense by Fort Recovery, 356 to 379 yards.
The Tribe will be away next week at Parkway.
