Tribe misses record by one in blowout (01/14/04)
FR girls basketball
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Indians girls basketball team is rolling along. It’ll soon find out just how much momentum it has.
There was more than enough of it Tuesday as Fort Recovery had what was nearly — and easily could have been — a record-breaking performance in a 95-42 destruction of the Ansonia Tigers.
The point total was one shy of the school record for scoring in a single game. The Indians (7-5) could have easily set the record, but backed off in the closing minutes.
The school mark of 96 points was set in 1990 — one of the years the Tribe won the state title — against Mendon.
The victory was the fifth in a row for Fort Recovery after opening at 2-5.
“We had hoped early that we would have an opportunity to go on a run,” said Indian coach Jeff Roessner. “We were playing well early and it wasn’t happening for us. After we got past that Jay County game we were able to get on a roll.”
The win over the Patriots was the first in the streak which Fort Recovery will take into its contest against the Marion Local Flyers Thursday. The Tribe will host the Flyers, who are 9-1, 4-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference and rated fourth in the area in Division IV by the Dayton Daily News.
The Indians will enter that game coming off a mammoth effort against the Tigers in which every player on the roster scored at least two points and grabbed at least one rebound.
The game was never really close, with Fort Recovery putting up 18 or more points in every quarter. It had a couple of 10-0 runs during the contest, and just kept increasing the lead throughout by dominating every facet of the game.
The Tribe was better in each shooting category, won the rebounding battle 43-25 and had 22 assists compared to just eight for Ansonia. The Tigers also finished with 24 turnovers, 15 more than the home team.
The Indians led by 14 after one quarter and 19 at halftime before really putting the contest away with 30 points in the third period.
Freshman Holly Stein led Fort Recovery with 18 points, finishing her night after hitting back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half for a 49-25 lead. She also had four rebounds.
Vicki Roessner, also a freshman, had a slow start to her shooting night before catching fire at the end. She opened 0-for-6 from the field, but hit her final six attempts to score all of her 13 points in the second half.
She also had six assists and four rebounds.
Senior Joscie Kaup scored 12 points and added a game-best eight assists. Juniors Krystal Rammel and Megan Wenning also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Jenn Stahl had eight points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Wenning added six, and Rammel had five.
Ciera Rammel scored eight points and dished out four assists.
“The kids are shooting the ball well,” said Roessner. “You have to guard us outside because we have the shooters.”
He also said he thought his team’s defensive effort was better in the second half after allowing too much dribble penetration before the intermission.
Three players reached double figures for Ansonia, which shot just 40 times in the game compared to 78 for the Indians. Allison Stammen scored 12 points, and Sara Printz and Kendra Bellenstein each added 11.
Amanda Fraley had a team-best five rebounds, and Bellenstein dished out three assists.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also clobbered Ansonia for a 78-29 win.
The Tribe led by 31 at halftime and never looked back. It allowed single-digit points and scored 14 or more in each quarter, including a 27-7 advantage in the first.
Renee Evers paced a trio of Indians in double figures with 15 points. Tiff Gaerke had 12 points, and Sara Fortkamp added 11 points.
Gaerke grabbed a team-best six rebounds, and Fortkamp had highs of seven assists and five steals. Jackie Wenning added five assists, and Sam Staugler finished with five rebounds.
Dani Howdieshell and Amy Midlam scored six points apiece fore Ansonia. Molly Wentworth had six rebounds and a pair of assists.[[In-content Ad]]
