Tribe places second at Franklin Monroe (04/06/05)

FRHS track

PITSBURG, Ohio — The Indians’ narrow miss Tuesday didn’t come from any lack of talent, just a lack of numbers.

Kristi Westgerdes won three events and the Fort Recovery girls track team won seven overall to finish just behind the Tippecanoe Red Devils at the Franklin Monroe Invitational. The 10-member Tribe scored 109.5 points at the event, and Tippecanoe had 113.

Steve Westgerdes managed the lone victory for the boys team, which finished sixth in 51.5 points. The Tri-County North Panthers won with 94.5 points, and Tippecanoe was second with 88.

Westgerdes, a senior, had another big day for the Indians after winning a pair of events at each of the team’s first two meets last week. She stayed undefeated in the sprints, winning the 100-meter dash in 13.45 seconds and the 200 dash in 27.6.

She also took first by nearly four inches in the long jump with a winning leap of 14 feet, five inches.

She was also second in the high jump at four feet, eight inches.

Sophomore Holly Stein grabbed two more victories for Fort Recovery as she dominated the throwing events. She won the discus with a toss of 98 feet, four inches, and the shot put at 32 feet, five inches.

Vicki Roessner added a victory in the 300 hurdles in 51.03 seconds, and Mindy Vogel took the 400 dash in 1-minute, 5.63 seconds.

The win for the boys team came in the shot put, where Westgerdes outdistanced the field with a toss of 39 feet, 41/2 inches.

Freshman Matt Vagedes added a second-place effort in the pole vault, where he tied the Fort Recovery school record for the second time this year by clearing the bar at 11 feet.[[In-content Ad]]
