Tribe rallies past Coldwater (02/05/08)

FRHS boys basketball

COLDWATER, Ohio - They had to be tired, running just a six-man rotation.

A seven-point deficit with barely half a quarter to play couldn't have helped their morale.

But the Indians knew they could win at The Palace - they've done it once already this year - so they never gave up.

Fort Recovery finished Monday night's Midwest Athletic Conference battle on a 13-5 run to rally for a 49-48 victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers.

Greg Kahlig and Clint Tobe brought the Indians (13-4, 6-2 MAC), who defeated the Cavaliers 51-48 in the championship game of the Coldwater Holiday tournament, roaring back from a 43-36 deficit with 4:17 to play.

Kahlig, a sophomore and the team's leading scorer, got the rally started with a 3-point play at the four-minute mark. A pair of free throws each by Tobe and Kahlig pulled the Tribe to within 44-43, and a Tobe jumper moved Fort Recovery ahead.

Kurt Riethman split free throws to tie the game with 1:29 to go only to have Kahlig reclaim the lead again with just a minute to play. Ryan Geier's 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining pushed the Cavaliers ahead 48-47, but he fouled Kahlig 14 seconds later.

Kahlig buried both free throws, Coldwater (9-7, 4-3 MAC) turned the ball over with nine seconds on the clock and a last-second 3-point attempt by Zach Siefring was off the mark.

Nine of Kahlig's game-high 17 points came in the fourth quarter as he finished 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. He also had six rebounds and two blocks.

Tobe added 16 points, four rebounds and game highs of four blocks, three assists and three steals. Rammel finished with 10 points, Brent Faller grabbed four rebounds and Frank Thien totaled three assists.

Fort Recovery, which turned the ball over just six times, led by four at halftime. The Cavaliers outscored FRHS 18-10 in the third quarter to pull ahead before the Tribe rallied in the closing minutes.

Geier totaled 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Coldwater.

Eric Lefeld led the Cavaliers to a 36-8 advantage on the glass with 12 rebounds, and Riethman scored 10 points.

The teams played even in the first period, but Coldwater outscored the Indians 24-10 over the course of the next two. FRHS shot just 18 percent in the second half and was out-rebounded 38-22 in the defeat.

Tim Brunet led the Cavalier victory with 13 points and six rebounds. Chad Westgerdes scored eight points, and Luke Grieshop grabbed eight boards
