Tribe rolls in opener (08/24/07)

FRHS football

ANSONIA, Ohio - So far, so good.

The weather left something to be desired, but Fort Recovery couldn't have asked for a much better start to the football season.

The Indians rolled out to a 19-0 lead at the half and went home with a 33-0 victory over the Ansonia Tigers when lightning halted the game with 7:43 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Junior quarterback Toby Metzger, beginning his third season as a starter, was a part of three Tribe touchdowns, and running back Matt Braun turned in a mammoth effort in his first start at the tailback slot.

Braun put the Indians on his back after Wes Kahlig's 38-yard return of the opening kickoff. After 7-yard opening run, Braun broke off a 30-yard scamper to put the ball on the Ansonia 6-yard line.

He capped off the Indians' first drive of the season with a 1-yard touchdown run three plays later.

Metzger took care of the rest of the first-half scoring, hitting sophomore Greg Kahlig with a 10-yard touchdown pass to finish off Fort Recovery's second drive. On its third, Metzger launched a 58-yard strike to Michael Trobridge and the rout was on.

Braun finished the evening with 133 yards on 24 carries. Metzger, who also ran for a 4-yard touchdown in the third quarter, went 6-of-11 through the air for 114 yards and the pair of first-half TDs.

Frank Thien added the other touchdown for the Indians - a 10-yard run in the third quarter - as they out-gained Ansonia 394-214.

Following four consecutive 1-9 seasons, Fort Recovery hopes to build on this year's victory over Ansonia. In three of the last four year's the Tribe has defeated the Tigers, then proceeded to go winless the rest of the way.

The Indians will be on the road again Friday when they visit Parkway at 7:30 p.m.

Opening the season at home, Ansonia struggled to get anything going Friday night.

Although quarterback Chance Cox completed eight of his 17 pass attempts, he also threw three interceptions. The Tigers picked up just 50 yards on the ground, with Dylan Bubeck running five times for 26 yards and Eric Beisner 15 times for 19 yards (1.3 yards per carry).
