Tribe rolls over Tigers (01/10/2009)

FRHS boys basketball

VERSAILLES, Ohio - Even though it couldn't get many shots to fall in the first half, the Fort Recovery boys basketball team settled down in the second and pulled through with a 49-34 win over the Versailles Tigers.

Despite shooting a depressing 5-of-21 (24 percent) from the field in the first half, the Tribe (7-2, 1-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) managed to take a 17-15 lead into halftime.

After the half, Fort Recovery settled in and drastically improved to a 59 percent clip from the field and paved the way to a win.

The Tigers couldn't take advantage of the weak first half put up by FRHS, themselves shooting only 35 percent and then growing even colder hitting only 23 percent in the second half. Versailles was also lost on the free-throw line, shooting 7-of-18, a lowly 39 percent.

Greg Kahlig carried the load for the Indians, scoring 23 points, pulling down eight rebounds and rejecting three shots. Craig Tobe followed with 12 points, and Toby Metzger pulled down 10 rebounds and had six steals.

Frank Thein dished seven assists and grabbed five rebounds.

Patrick Mescher had nine points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers. Derek Langenkamp added another nine for Versailles.

The Indians outlasted Versailles to hold on for a 35-32 victory.

Fort Recovery led 25-14 going into the half, but a 12-5 third quarter brought the Tigers back into the game going into the final period. But the home team couldn't complete the comeback as the Tribe held on for the win.

Cody Fiely led the Indians with 10 points, and Michael Gaerke and Ryan Schoen each contributed nine. The Tribe shot only 2-of-13 from the field in the second half.

Versailles' James Wilker led all scorers with 14 points. He grabbed six rebounds, and Mitchel Campbell totaled eight points and 10 boards in the losing effort.[[In-content Ad]]
