BERNE — The Tribe hopes these numbers can hold up. Or at least something close to them.

Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team had its best shooting night of the season Tuesday as it handed South Adams its 18th straight defeat, 77-43.

The 77 points were by far the most for the Indians this season as they shot 56 percent from the field. Their previous high was 60 points in a victory over Franklin Monroe.

The Tribe (7-3) got a bundle of those points by turning steals and rebounds into fast breaks.

“We just felt like it was something we had to do all year and we don’t do it very well,” said Fort Recovery coach Jeff Roessner. “We’re a great rebounding team. To run a fast break, that’s the first thing you have to do. It’s just natural that we should be able to do that.”

South Adams was willing to run with the Indians, but couldn’t keep up. It trailed 9-7 after three minutes, and then gave up a 13-1 Indian run as it dropped to 0-11 on the season.

Fort Recovery added a 10-0 run spanning the first and second quarters en route to a 19-point halftime lead. It closed the game on a 24-5 run.

Four of the five Tribe starters shot better than 50 percent for the game, and four also scored in double figures.

Tiff Gaerke paced the Indians with 14 points, including a 4-of-5 effort from the foul line. She was coming off a 10-of-13 free throw effort against Jay County.

Vicki Roessner was 6-of-9 from the field and made her only 3-point attempt to finish with 13 points. Holly Stein went 5-of-7 and Krystal Rammel was 5-of-8 as they each scored 11 points.

Sara Fortkamp was 3-of-4 off the bench and scored eight points, and Ciera Rammel went 3-of-4 for six points.

“We had some moments, especially early, where we had good intensity and players came out strong,” said Roessner. “I think we had a hard time recapturing that intensity in the third quarter.

“The good part is we scored 77 and we shot 56 percent from the field for the game. We’ve never had numbers like that all year. A lot of that was we were getting some easy baskets.”

Megan Wenning came off the bench for a game-high nine rebounds for Roessner, who had every player on his roster in the game by the end of the first quarter. Stein followed Wenning with seven rebounds, and Krystal Rammel and Gaerke each grabbed five.

Roessner finished with six assists, and Gaerke and Kelsie Will notched two blocks apiece.

Kindle Inniger was the high scorer for South Adams, which struggled because of 30 turnovers and a 35-24 rebounding disadvantage, with 13 points. She also had three assists.

The Starfires scored a bunch of points from the foul line as the officials blew their whistles at a frightening pace for the first three quarters. Kayla Coblentz was responsible for 11 of her team’s 25 trips to the stripe, and converted seven as she scored 11 points.

Natalie Haines added seven points. Coblentz and JoLyn Yoder shared the team high of four rebounds.

South Adams will have its hands full again Friday as it still looks for the first win of the season. It will host undefeated Allen County Athletic Conference rival Southern Wells (11-0) at 6 p.m.

Fort Recovery also faces a tough task as it travels to New Knoxville (7-3).

“New Knoxville is a very good defensive team,” said Roessner. “They’re going to play man and a 2-3 zone, which are both real solid. They’re not going to give you many easy shots, so making the shots is going to be critical.”

Junior varsity

The junior varsity game between the Indians and the Starfires was close at halftime, but Fort Recovery came out like gangbusters in the second half and stomped South Adams 42-21.

After leading just 17-13 at the intermission, the Indians opened the second half on a 13-0 run which was capped by a Sam Staugler 3-pointer. They outscored South Adams 17-4 in the third period to put the game away.

Jill Pottkotter was the lone Tribe player in double figures as she finished with 12 points. Staugler added nine points, Val Fortkamp had eight and Abby Niekamp scored six.

Fortkamp notched 10 steals, and Lauren Wenning added five. Wenning also grabbed a game-high six rebounds, with Pottkotter and Shelly Gehret following with five apiece. Abby Niekamp and Val Fortkamp each notched four assists.

Andrea Moser paced South Adams with eight points and four rebounds. Katie Nichols had three points, and Jodie Muhlenkamp grabbed three rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
