Tribe splits, will open against the Tigers (04/24/06)

FORT RECOVERY — The Indians will kick off tournament play Saturday.
The Fort Recovery baseball team got the opening game of the Minster sectional as the tournament seeding meeting was held Sunday. Also Saturday, the Indians split a double-header against the Botkins Trojans losing the opener 10-8 and winning game two 8-7.
The Tribe (8-6) will play in Minster’s sectional opener Saturday against Waynesfield-Goshen at noon. New Bremen and New Knoxville will follow in the other first-round game at 2:30 p.m.
The Fort Recovery/Waynesfield-Gosen winner will play top-seeded Minster for a sectional title Saturday, May 6 at noon. The New Bremen/New Knoxville winner will meet Marion Local in the other sectional championship game May 6 at 2:30, and the winners will move on to district semifinal action Monday, May 15 at 5 p.m.
Against sectional foes so far this year the Indians defeated New Knoxville 10-0 and lost to Minster 9-4. They will host Marion Local Thursday.
In Saturday’s action the Indians scored three times in the final two innings to salvage a split after giving up the lead late in the opener.
Bobby Rammel paced the game-two offense, reaching base four times with three walks and a single. He stole a base and scored three runs.
Brad Fortkamp added two hits, including a double, Chris Galdeen had two hits and Clint Tobe scored twice.
Kevin Schoenherr got the win as he tossed one scoreless inning of relief.
Fort Recovery had a 7-2 lead in the opening game before Botkins scored three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the top of the six to tie it. The Indians went up 9-7 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but gave up three more in the top of the seventh for the final margin.
Clint Tobe took the loss as all three of the runs against him in his only inning of work were unearned.
Troy Metzger finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles an RBI and a run. Galdeen had two hits and three RBIs, and Rammel, Tobe and Toby Metzger added two hits apiece.
Junior varsity
BOTKINS, Ohio — The Indians had no problem racking up runs in wins of 10-6 and 12-3 over Botkins Saturday.
Jordan Staugler and Tom Staugler led the respectively onslaughts, finishing 2-for-4 in games one and two respectively. Jordan Staugler added four stolen bases and two runs in the opener, and Tom Staugler had a double and two runs in the second game.
Ross Overman added three hits and two stolen bases in game one. Matt Braun stole two bases and scored twice.
