Tribe takes opener (11/20/04)

ST. MARYS, Ohio — Holly Stein and Tiffany Gaerke scored the first six points Friday night and kept leading the Fort Recovery girls basketball team all the way in their season-opening victory. They each had 12 points as the Tribe cruised to a 44-31 victory over the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders.

Stein made the first bucket 13 seconds into the game, and Gaerke followed with two in the next 10 seconds for the 6-0 lead. It was the first of two 6-0 runs by the Indians as they took a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

They led by 10 points at halftime, but truly put the game away at the end of the third. Up 33-21, Fort Recovery got field goals from Vicki Roessner and Stein followed by a Stein 3-pointer to finish on a 7-0 run as the lead ran to 19 points.

Stein, who hit 37 3-pointers last season as a freshman, went 2-of-5 from long distance and had eight rebounds and three assists. Gaerke, also a sophomore, finished 6-of-10 from the field with seven boards.

Krystal Rammel had a game-best 10 rebounds, and Roessner and Megan Wenning each added six points. Roessner also posted a game-best four assists, and Ciera Rammel added three.

Toya Anderson was the only St. Marys player in double figures as she finished 5-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, for 14 points. The rest of the team was just 7-of-38 (18 percent) from the field.

Emily Shellabarger had seven rebounds, six points and three assists.

Fort Recovery will play its home opener tonight when it hosts Greenville at 6 p.m.

Junior varsity

The Fort Recovery junior varsity team managed just two points in overtime as it dropped a 45-39 decision to St. Marys Memorial.

St. Marys led by five at halftime, but Fort Recovery rallied to tie the game at the end of three quarters. They played even in the fourth quarter before the Roughriders, sparked by Vanessa McDermitt and Kimber Brown, took the win in overtime.

McDermitt finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Brown was the high scorer for St. Marys with 15 points. Whitney Johns added five steals and four assists.

Jill Pottkotter paced the Tribe with 15 points, and Sam Staugler followed with 12. Pottkotter also had a team high of nine rebounds.

Abby Niekamp and Val Fortkamp each had three assists. Fortkamp added seven steals, and Niekamp had six rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
