Tribe takes title (02/23/08)

FRHS boys basketball

COLDWATER, Ohio - It wasn't a good night.

But it was good enough, and the Fort Recovery Indians came away with a Division IV Sectional championship Friday, edging past Minster 38-34.

The Indians hit just 36.6 percent of their field goal attempts, but scrappy defense held Minster to an even worse 28.3 percent to give Fort Recovery the win.

The Indians are now 17-5, while Minster's season ends at 11-11.

Clint Tobe and Greg Kahlig again carried the bulk of the burden for the Indians, leading in both scoring and rebounding.

Tobe hit 5 of 12 attempts from the field, including one 3-pointer for a total of 11 points. Kahlig struggled from the field, hitting just 2 of 11 attempts. But he excelled at the free throw line, knocking down 6 of 7 attempts to finish the night with 10 points.

Kahlig led in the rebounding department with 7, 3 offensively and 4 defensively. Tobe had 5 rebounds, 4 of them defensively.

The Indians jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the first quarter, then fell apart in the second period when Minster outscored Fort Recovery 11-3 to make it 18-15 at the half with the Indians trailing.

Neither team could connect much with the basket in the third period, but in the fourth Fort Recovery got back on track.

Trailing by six after Sam Otting's hoop 1:30 into the final period, the Indians finally halted a nearly nine-minute scoreless streak. Brent Faller's bucket in the ppaint with 6:22 remaining was the first for the Tribe since Clint Tobe's 3-pointer in the first minute of the third quarter, and it kicked off a 10-0 run.

Kahlig followed Faller with a pair of free throws, and Tobe, Kahlig and Bobby Rammel each added hoops for a 30-26 lead.

The Wildcats pulled even again at 32 with two minutes left, but Faller pushed the Indians ahead for good with 1:05 left off a Frank Thien assist. Kahlig added four of his free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the victory.

Sam Otting led for Minster with 11, while Keith Nerderman and Logan Sommer each had 7 points.[[In-content Ad]]
