FORT RECOVERY - The Indians got it done through the air Friday night as their junior quarterback aired out five touchdowns in a season-opening 48-6 victory over Ansonia.
Junior Greg Kahlig got it done from the pocket, throwing five TD passes on the night, finishing 17-of-26 for 279 yards. The game opened on a strong note with Kahlig connecting with senior Frank Thien for a 50-yard reception and the first touchdown of the night just 39 seconds into the game.
It was the first of three TDs he would throw in the first quarter, the other two being a 12-yard dump to Nathan Keller with 8:28 remaining and a 17-yard connection to Thien with 2:20 to go.
Kahlig tossed his other two touchdowns in the second quarter before the Indians went primarily to the run in the second half. Kahlig hit six different receivers in the game, going to Thien five times, Keller four and Craig Tobe for three.
Thien banked 107 yards on five receptions and another 20 on five rushes as he crossed the goal line three times for the Indians. Senior Matt Braun led the rushing effort for Fort Recovery with 57 yards on 13 carries.
Although both sides ran 55 plays and time of possession was nearly equal, offensive bursts from the Indians kept the game well out of reach. The Indians consistently moved the ball, picking up 17 first downs
Ansonia struggled all night to get some sort of rhythm as the Tigers were only able to put together 198 all-purpose yards in comparison to Fort Recovery's 548. The lone score from Ansonia came off of a fumbled punt return by Fort Recovery with 6:46 remaining in the first quarter.
The Tigers were plagued by turnovers, losing two fumbles and an interception, all of which the Indians turned into quick touchdowns.
The Fort Recovery defense shut down the pass, keeping the Tigers to only 4 receptions on 15 passing attempts for 31 yards. Ansonia picked up most of its forward progress on the ground, pushing the Indians for 142 yards on 40 carries.
The opener blowout is a good sign for Fort Recovery, which is hoping to continue to improve off of 2007's 5-5 season after a string of disastrous 1-9 years. The Indians will take to the road next week, playing at Cardinal Stritch.[[In-content Ad]]
