Tribe tops 'Hawks for first win (12/10/03)

The Fort Recovery girls basketball team earned its first victory of the season Tuesday, winning every phase of the game in a 79-34 trouncing of the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks.
The Tribe put four players in double figures, building a mammoth first-half lead thanks in part to awful shooting by the Blackhawks.
Mississinawa Valley managed just 21 percent from the field in the first half as the Indians took a 43-14 lead. Fort Recovery also took advantage of 30 turnovers by the opposition as it scored at least 18 points in each quarter.
The Indians (1-2) shot 42 percent for the game with four players scoring in double figures.
Joscie Kaup paced them with 21 points. She also had five assists and five steals. Freshman Vicki Roessner scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and Megan Wenning and Olivia Post each had 11.
Jenn Stahl pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, and Krystal Rammel added six. Ciera Rammel dished out four assists.
Emily Bateman and Whitney Gelhaus shared scoring honors for Mississinawa Valley with eight points apiece, and Ashley Brewer had seven. Gelhaus grabbed seven rebounds, and Bateman was next with five.
Fort Recovery’s next contest is at Minster Thursday at 6 p.m.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity girls basketball team was even more dominant, allowing just 12 field goal attempts in a 40-13 victory.
Mississinawa Valley made just two of those 12 shots, finishing the game a 17 percent shooting. It finished with more than twice as many turnovers (32) as points.
The Indians (2-1) didn’t shoot very well from the field themselves (30 percent), but it was more than enough to beat the Blackhawks.
Julie Link was one short of matching the entire Mississinawa Valley team as she scored 12 points. Tiff Gaerke, Sara Fortkamp and Kelly Link each added six points.
Julie Link had seven rebounds and Kelly Link added six as the Tribe double the Blackhawks on the glass as well, 34-17.
Fortkamp finished with seven steals.
Kelley Livingston had team highs of four points and four rebounds for Mississinawa Valley.
Junior high
The Indians took on Coldwater in junior high action Tuesday, with the girls taking two wins while the boys teams each lost.
The eighth grade girls team won 40-12, and the seventh grade team took a 24-10 victory. They eighth grade boys team dropped to a 42-29 loss after a close first half, and the seventh grade team took a 59-7 defeat.
The Indian eighth graders went up by 13 points after the first period and never trailed as they won their opening game of the year.
Val Fortkamp paced the team with 18 points, and Jenn Nietfeld had a team-best seven rebounds. Jill Pottkotter had 10 points and five rebounds.
The seventh grade team also opened it’s year with a win as the defense dominated. It scored just six first-quarter points, but took an 18-4 halftime lead on the way to the victory.
Anne Koesters shared a team-high with eight points and also paced the Indians with nine rebounds. Joanna Snyder scored eight points, and Rachel Tobe had four boards.
The eighth grade boys were deadlocked with the Cavaliers at halftime before going scoreless in the third period to led the game slip away. Bobby Rammel, Curt Heitkamp and Eric Lamm each finished with five points.
