Tribe try falls short (09/27/2008)
FRHS football
FORT RECOVERY - It was a homecoming heartbreaker for Fort Recovery as a risky two-point conversion to win the game came up short, handing a 27-26 victory to the New Bremen Cardinals.
The Indians (3-3) went all-in to try to put an exciting end to their homecoming game, but failed to convert.
After a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Greg Kahlig with 27 seconds remaining in the game put the Tribe just an extra point away from overtime, Fort Recovery gambled on the two-pointer to win it. Frank Thien couldn't connect with his intended receiver Toby Metzger, however, putting a depressing end to the fourth quarter comeback march.
The two teams traded touchdowns throughout the first half, putting up a seven each quarter to go into the half tied at 14.
The Indians missed an opportunity at beginning of the second quarter to extend their lead. On second down at the 1-yard line, Fort was flagged for an illegal shift to back the ball up 5 yards. Thien powered forward back to the goal line, coming up just short of the touchdown.
The Cardinals packed the box on third and fourth downs, stuffing Thien two more times and earning the ball on downs.
New Bremen took the lead for the first time in the third quarter, and held the Indians to two punts.
Fort took its first possession of the final quarter and drove 81 yards, capped for a 2-yard keeper by Kahlig, but Aaron Wilker missed the extra point to keep the Cardinals ahead by one.
New Bremen responded, scoring on an 11-yard pass with 3:02 remaining the game, but also missed its extra point to keep their lead at seven.
Fort cruised 58 yards to score its final touchdown of the game before the heartbreaking end. The Cardinals handled the ensuing onside kickoff attempt to seal the loss for the Tribe.
Kahlig had a strong evening, connecting on 20-of-31 passes for 238 yards and one touchdown, and adding 57 yards and two TDs on the ground. He threw to six different receivers, hitting Metzger seven times for 95 yards and Craig Tobe seven times for 72 yards and a TD.
Matt Braun led the Indians' run game with 11 carries for 60 yards.
