ST. MARYS, Ohio - If the Indians could avoid Parkway, they'd be golden.

The Fort Recovery High School volleyball team won its first two matches Saturday at the St. Marys Invitational before running into the Parkway Panthers again.

The Tribe cruised past Bethel 25-12, 25-16, then rallied for a 15-25, 25-21, 25-15 victory over the host Roughriders. But Parkway, which also defeated the Indians Thursday night in Midwest Athletic Conference action, halted Fort Recovery 25-14, 25-22 in its final match of the day.

The most exciting match for the Indians (3-2) came in the middle of the day against St. Marys.

After an Anne Koesters ace evened the opening game at eight, the Roughriders ripped off a 17-7 run to pull away for the win. But Fort Recovery bounced back to take the second game, then returned the favor with an even more dominating stretch to close game three.

Neither team managed to score more than two consecutive points out of the first 22 serves of the third game, and a couple of Tribe attack errors had St. Marys staked to a 12-10 lead. From there, Fort Recovery never gave the Roughriders a chance.

An ace from Rachel Tobe, a kill by Joanna Snyder and a Koesters block pushed the Indians ahead and forced a St. Marys timeout as coach Tricia Naseman felt the momentum fading. But the break in play did nothing to slow the Indians.

They came right back out with four more points in a row - the Tribe completed an 8-0 run overall - including two more kills from Snyder. The Roughriders finally managed to break the run as the Tribe scored 15 of the final 18 points in the match, closing with back-to-back kills by Kinsey Wenning and Sarah Braun.

Fort Recovery's win in game two to force the deciding third was powered by a hot start. Beth May scored six straight points as Nicole Pottkotter and Wenning had back-to-back kills to start the game.

St. Marys closed to within two at 16-14, but Snyder and Braun responded with consecutive kills and the Indians never trailed.

Wenning, Koesters and Braun all finished the match with eight kills. Wenning added a team-high nine digs, Pottkotter put up 20 assists and Beth May scored 11 points.

Fort Recovery clobbered Bethel, using a 7-0 run in the opening game for a 16-4 lead and a 6-1 run in game two to pull ahead 16-6.

Wenning, who tallied six kills and five blocks, also led that victorious effort. Pottkotter had nine assists, and Kelsey Wuebker scored six points.

Pottkotter powered the Tribe against Parkway, leading the team with 11 assists, six points and two blocks. Wenning had six kills and Heather Schmackers finished with six digs.
