Tribe wins at Bremen (02/09/07)

FRHS girls basketball

NEW BREMEN, Ohio - The Cardinals proved once again that there is no such thing as an easy MAC game, especially on the road.

New Bremen, among the lower tier of Midwest Athletic Conference teams this year, pushed the Division IV No. 5 Fort Recovery Indians Thursday. But the Tribe showed why they are a favorite to make a deep tournament run, breaking up a tie game with an 11-3 fourth-quarter run en route to a 49-41 victory.

Fort Recovery (14-3, 5-2 MAC) had an eight-point lead early, but the game was tied at halftime and deadlocked again - for the seventh time - at 36 after a Stephanie Winner basket with 6:45 to play. From there it was all about the Indians as senior forward Tiff Gaerke made a couple of big plays to kick off the winning run.

Gaerke scored on the ensuing possession to reclaim the lead for the Tribe, then came up with a steal on the defensive end. Her swipe resulted in a Sara Fortkamp 3-pointer off a Vicki Roessner assist, and New Bremen never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

Fortkamp added another basket during the Fort Recovery run, and assisted on a Roessner 3-pointer. The Indians hit three triples in the second half after missing all of their eight tries before the break.

Gaerke powered the Tribe as her basket which gave the team the lead for good capped a 17-point effort. She shot 7-of-9 (78 percent) from the field and also had 15 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.

Roessner added 11 points and three assists, and Fortkamp had four steals.

Fort Recovery played its first game without senior Holly Stein, who was averaging team-highs of 13.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. She suffered a foot injury in the team's loss to St. John's last week.

The Cardinals (8-10, 3-5 MAC) got team highs of 12 points and seven rebounds from Stephanie Winner. She finished 6-of-9 (67 percent) from the field.

Taylor Jones added nine points and six rebounds, Christine Schwartz scored eight points and LeAnn Topp had three assists and three steals.

Fort Recovery struggled from the field in the second half in a 30-29 loss to the Cardinals.

The Indians led by two at halftime, but hit for just 19 percent (4-of-21) from the field in the final two quarters. New Bremen pushed to a 24-20 lead after three quarters and held on for the win.

Melissa Bruggeman paced the Cardinals with 15 points and seven rebounds, both game highs. Bethany Webster added seven points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Chelsey Leuthold racked up team highs of 11 points, six rebounds and four steals for Fort Recovery. Josie Guggenbiller had seven points and five rebounds, and Nicole Pottkotter finished with five assists.[[In-content Ad]]
