Tribute to mom
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
When my wife Ruth passed away last November we asked our children to write a brief note about their memories of their mother for Tom Laux, who was to give her eulogy.
I recently found this note written by my daughter Cathy Reef of Berne.
I thought it was very appropriate for all mothers.
“When I think of my mother, I don’t focus on any one experience. Instead, every time I’ve looked back over her life, it’s never ceased to amaze me how hard she worked day in and day out. Six kids, who were hardly angels; milking cows morning and night; keeping the garden; canning and freezing food for the year; three meals a day, every day when she wasn’t working outside the home. And when she did go to work later on, she still came home after being on her feet all day long at the factory, slammed a meal on the table, milked cows and tried to keep that old house at least halfway straightened up. No small feat.
“When the flu made the rounds in our young family, she was never too sick to take care of us, no matter how bad she felt.
“When dad invited folks in for a meal at the last minute (not an uncommon occurrence) she always managed to come up with something, and you sure didn’t hear complaints about her cooking.
“She never, ever spent money casually on herself that I can remember. She always put her family ahead of her own wants and needs. We were, quite simply, incredibly blessed to have her as our mother.” — Cathy Reef
Sincerely,
Dick Houser and family
Bryant
Poling thanks
To the editor:
This member of the Poling High School class of 1963 had a wonderful Saturday. Lots of fun. Lots of people to thank.
First, David and Anita Frasher and the Jay County Historical Society for all of their work on the display, the articles, and publicity.
Secondly, Bill and Arlene Horn, Rosemary Valentine and the Poling Alumni association for a great and fun banquet.
Third, Clarel and Kay Strausburg for opening their home to us for an evening of fun and reminiscing. Last but not least to all of the class members of PHS 1963, family and friends for coming out to make it a great night.
