Trip to Chicago great despite problems (05/25/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

5:30 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2006. Was the sun up? Not yet.

7 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006. Was the sun up? Absolutely!

Who would’ve thought our Chicago trip would be an overnight stay for some of us? Luckily, I was not one of them, as the bus we were on rolled in at 3:45 a.m. What a day! We dealt with an over-heated bus and a flat tire.

However, the trip was great!

I must say I was a little worried about so many sixth graders at once, but to my surprise we had a perfect day. That group of sixth graders represented East Jay Middle School very well. I was proud to be a part of such a great group of young adults.

Yes, we had problems on the way home, which were out of everyone’s control. I thought the staff handled the situation well and the bus drivers were very knowledgeable as to how to handle the problems.

So for all the sixth graders, you are a great group to travel with. To the staff, thank you for a wonderful time. Everything was planned very well. I know it took some time and planning to pull it all together.

Thank you to Mr. Lee Newman for being at East Jay in the early morning hours to inform the parents of the trouble with the buses. And thank you to the bus drivers of Star of America for getting us to Chicago and home safely.

Chaperone parent,

Melissa Franks

Young readers

To the editor:

On the behalf of the fifth grade at East Elementary, we would like to thank you for all the free newspapers (distributed in connection with “Brain Freeze,” a project of the Hoosier State Press Association Foundation, the Indiana State Reading Association, and The Commercial Review).

We had fun reading all the articles in the paper. We really appreciated the kindness and thoughtfulness. We had a blast!

Thank you for helping us learn. You were a great role model to us. We appreciate all of your kindness to young readers everywhere.

Sincerely and truly,

The Fifth Grade at East Elementary School
