ARCANUM - Suddenly, the Indians found their home runs swings.
Fort Recovery High School's baseball team survived its opening game Saturday, holding on for a 6-5 win over the Arcanum Trojans. Without a home run on the season, the Tribe broke out of its power slump with three long balls in an 11-0, game-two victory.
Brady Kahlig led the FRHS offense in game two, smacking one of the team's three homers while also adding a double. Toby Metzger and Ryan Schoen also added a home run and two RBIs apiece.
Frank Thien and Cody Fiely each had a single, two RBIs and a run for the Indians (5-3-1), who took control with an eight-run second inning. A.J. Backs scored a pair of runs.
Travis Hart picked up the win as he allowed just two hits and one walk in 3 2/3 shutout innings.
Fort Recovery trailed 2-0 in the opener, but took a 6-3 lead thanks to four runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Trojans scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Thien took the mound in relief and struck out a pair of batters for the save.
Toby Metzger went the first 6 1/3 innings for the win, giving up five runs - four earned - on four hits and one walk. He struck out seven batters.
Hart set the tone offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs. Backs had two hits, two runs and an RBI, and Metzger had the lone extra-base hit with a double.
Junior varsity
The Tri-County North Panthers overmatched Fort Recovery, handing the Indians 16-1 and 13-1 losses in five and six innings respectively.
The Tribe managed just a total of four hits, with Hayden Pottkotter getting a single in each game. Jason Pottkotter and Shane Brunswick also had one hit apiece in game two.
Jason Pottkotter suffered the game-one loss, giving up nine runs - four earned - on two hits and five walks in two innings. Nine of the Panthers' 16 runs in the game were unearned.
Tri-County North got seven more unearned runs in the second game against pitchers Ethan Schoenherr and Hayden Pottkotter.[[In-content Ad]]
