True colors?

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

Indiana's anti-gun Senators Evan "Hoosier Values" Bayh and Richard Lugar have just shown their true colors on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Under consideration was legislation, already passed in the House, that would have put an end to attempts by liberal anti-gun mayors to bankrupt the gun industry with an unending string of frivolous lawsuits.

The Senate added amendments to its version that turned this pro-gun legislation into an anti-gun travesty.

The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban is set to expire in September. Today the Senate and both our Senators voted to extend this fraudulent concept that actually increased assault weapons ownership and bans the manufacture of the high capacity 9-mm handguns carried by most police departments.

The Senate and both our Senators also voted to close down gun shows by imposing requirements that no gun show owner could possibly hope to meet.

Our own Senator Bayh went even further by voting to ban as much as half of the standard ammunition used in hunting rifles because it can penetrate bullet proof vests that were never intended to stop rifle bullets. This amendment did not pass the Senate.

In fact the entire bill was voted down on the request of its sponsors because of the damage these amendments did to it.

He helped destroy a good piece of legislation, but at least we found out the kind of "New York" values Senator Bayh actually stands for.
