Tune in to U.S. Senate debate

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
This year will be one of the most important elections in our lifetimes. With all of the accusations and outright distortions filling the airways about the Senate race between Representative Joe Donnelly and Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock we all need help sorting out who will best represent Indiana.
On Monday October 15th at 7 p.m. the candidates will hold their first debate.
It will be broadcast on several stations in our area, however they have not yet been posted on the Indiana Debate Commission website.
By the time this letter is published they should be available at www.indianadebatecommission.com. This site will also have copies of the debate that can be watched live online or replayed later at your convenience.
The Jay County TEA Party strongly recommends that everyone watch this debate and the other important debates coming up soon. These include the Gubernatorial Debates on October 17, and 25 and Senate debates on October 15, and 23. All are at 7 p.m.

Celebrating
To the editor:
The Jay County FFA has much reason to celebrate this school year. The annual fall bonfire was a success, bonding members together through fun activities like cornhole competitions and making s’mores.
The chapter also had a long line of three wagons and many tractors in the homecoming parade that revolved around the theme of the Thanksgiving holiday. Just when they thought it couldn’t get much better, the Jay County FFA Livestock Skill-A-Thon team placed 11th in the state competition.
Samantha Homan, Taylor Campbell, Brandon Muhlenkamp, Adam Jutte, and Bryan Schwieterman were among the 250 participants that competed at Purdue University’s campus.
The members had to judge a variety of wools, meats, and hay, along with classes of animals. In addition to these challenges, they were required to identify feedstuffs, livestock equipment, breeds of livestock, and were required to complete a quality assurance test.
The 250 students were the largest turnout that Purdue had hosted for the contest, and surely made the contest an even greater challenge.
To show once again that the Jay County FFA Chapter has remarkable students, the advisers received some even better news.
Both Andrew Minnich and Marissa Murrell were named national finalists in their National FFA Agricultural Proficiency awards. The Agricultural Proficiency Awards honor FFA members who, through their supervised agricultural experiences, have developed specialized skills that they can apply toward their future careers.
Andrew, who completed his proficiency over his involvement in poultry production, and Marissa, who completed her proficiency over her involvement in wildlife production and management, are both one of only four FFA members to compete for their individual awards at national finals during October’s 85th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis.
In recognition for being finalists, both members are being awarded $500 and a plaque. The national winner in each division will also receive an additional $500 during a special ceremony at the national FFA convention. Congratulations, FFA members, and keep up the good work!
