Undefeated Rangers top Fort (01/05/08)
FRHS boys basketball
NEW KNOXVILLE, Ohio - It would have been a stiff challenge under any circumstances.
But taking on an elite team on the road without its point guard proved to be way too much for the Fort Recovery Indians.
Playing without playmaker Toby Metzger, the Indians fell behind early and stayed there as host New Knoxville rolled to a 73-40 victory Friday night.
Metzger sat out Friday's game with an injury.
The Indians, who had won eight of their first nine games this season, found themselves down 22-7 after just eight minutes Friday against the Rangers. Things didn't get any easier over the final three quarters of play, as New Knoxville outscored Fort in each segment.
Fort Recovery drops to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in Midwest Athletic Conference play. New Knoxville, which finished last season ranked No. 1 in its division and defeated the Indians in the sectional championship game, remains perfect at 8-0 overall and 3-0 in MAC play.
Four Rangers reached double-figures in scoring Friday, paced by Austin Arnett with 17 points and Tony Meyer with 15. Austin Luck added 12 points and Caleb Allen 11 for New Knoxville.
Fort Recovery, which shot 40 percent (16-for-40) in the game compared to New Knoxville's 54 percent (26-for-48), was paced by Greg Kahlig's 14 points and Bobby Rammel's 12.
Kahlig also had team-best totals of six rebounds and three assists for the Indians, who host Houston tonight.
New Knoxville also won Friday night's junior varsity game, 35-28, dropping the Indian reserves to 6-3 on the season.
Fort Recovery's leading scorer Friday was Josh Wendel with 10 points. He also had seven rebounds.
Cody Fiely and Craig Tobe each scored five points apiece, and Matt Braun came up with four steals.
Marcus Reineke of New Knoxville led all scorers with 14 points.
