Unearned runs finish Indians at National Trail (04/06/04)

More unearned runs hurt the Fort Recovery baseball team Monday as it gave up two big innings in a 10-3 loss to the host National Trail Blazers.
After two scoreless frames, the Indians (1-3) jumped in front with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. However, they allowed five runs in both the third and fourth as National Trail took control for good.
Half of the Blazers’ runs were unearned.
Dusty Guggenbiller (0-2) allowed nine runs — four earned — in three innings for the loss. He gave up five hits, while walking two and striking out two.
Dan Heitkamp allowed one run on three hits in three innings.
C.J. Tobe paced the Fort Recovery offense, reaching base three times on a pair of walks and a single. He also had two runs and three stolen bases.
Dusty Tobe had a single and two RBIs, and Guggenbiller added an RBI double.
The next game for the Indians is at home Friday against Fort Loramie at 5 p.m.
Indians split pair
The Fort Recovery baseball team struggled with errors Saturday, but still managed to split a double-header as it visited the Houston Wildcats. It gave up 15 unearned runs on the day, losing the first game 14-4 before coming back for a 6-5 win in game two.
The Tribe jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second game, but all of it slipped away. Houston tied the score with one run in the fourth inning and four in the bottom of the fifth.
But, the tie didn’t last long, with Fort Recovery posting the winning run in the sixth inning.
C.J. Tobe paced the Tribe offense, going 2-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Dan Heitkamp notched one hit, one RBI and one run, and Brad Fortkamp had a hit, a pair of stolen bases and one run.
Fortkamp also took the victory, allowing five unearned runs on six hits as he went the distance. He struck out three and walked one.
In the first game of the twin bill Fort Recovery grabbed a 4-0 lead, but Houston erased it in the bottom of the second for a 4-4 tie. The Wildcats broke the game open with nine runs in the fourth inning, and added one in the fifth for the final margin.
C.J. Tobe took the loss as he was saddled with eight unearned runs. He gave up 12 runs in all on 10 hits in 22/3 innings. Kevin Schoenherr and Dusty Tobe each gave up one unearned run in relief.
Dusty Tobe finished 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs, and Greg Faller was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. C.J. Tobe added a double, two runs and one steal, and Fortkamp had a run and a stolen base.
Tribe drops opener
Fort Recovery lost 4-3 to Crestview in the season-opener Friday night.
The Tribe trailed 2-0 for much of the game before scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to pull ahead. But, Crestview bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the frame and held on for the victory.

Nick Wehrkamp also gave up a pair of runs on five hits in four innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Faller finished 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, and Wehrkamp smashed a double for a pair of RBIs. Todd Post went 2-for-4 and scored a run, and Dusty Tobe notched an RBI.
Fort JV falls
The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team struggled Saturday in a couple of losses — 11-2 and 13-8 — to the Houston Wildcats.
The Tribe trailed all the way in the first game, allowing eight runs in the second inning. It held a 6-4 lead heading into the seventh inning of game two, but gave up nine runs in the final frame.
Troy Metzger took the game-one loss, allowing 10 runs on three hits in one inning. He walked five and struck out two.
Kenton Sudhoff pitched one inning in the game-two defeat, allowing seven runs on three hits and four walks.
Eric Weitzel and Metzger each had three hits on the day. Metzger paced the Indians in the first game with a double and a stolen base.
Weitzel was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI in the second game. Sudhoff added two hits and two RBIs in the second game, and David Schmitt and Scott Hein had two hits apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
