Upset about items taken at grave site (06/01/06)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

People have come to new lows of thieving. To take anything from a cemetery is the lowest of the low.

My brother was born prematurely in 1953.

The last two years things have been taken from around the stone. One was a 2 1/2-foot concrete angel.

Last year my folks had a large hanging basket of petunias. They went two or three times a week to water those beautiful signs of love from those of us.

I’ve heard more each year of so much stealing at the cemeteries.

How can they (robbers) keep doing this? I think they take stuff because of no respect for anyone’s feelings and, even worse, I think there are so many taken to sell or trade for drugs or money for drugs.

I never got to know my brother, but we have kept him in our family’s hearts by talking about him and our years of being respectfully taught by visiting his grave and leaving our showings of love for him.

I would turn my own kids in for this or any type of robbery.

By the way, Center Cemetery needs help with operating funds.

For more information on donating, contact Carolyn Finch at (260) 726-2459.

They do a good job at keeping this small cemetery looking so well-kept.

Thank you for your time.

Thank you

To the editor:

I would like to thank a special friend, Mike Bichsel, for helping me see my son graduate from basic training. He took time away from his business that he just recently opened to help make it all possible.

Again, thank you for helping and understanding how important this meant to me.

To the editor:

Recently the fourth, fifth and sixth grade classes at the Jay County Christian Academy had the opportunity to go to Exchange City in Indianapolis. This opportunity was provided by a teacher creativity grant given by The Portland Foundation.

The students completed six weeks of classroom instruction for their five-hour simulation at Exchange City. During this simulation, they learned how to run a city from electing a mayor to owning their own business. They also learned how to manage their checkbook and to shop in the city paying for their purchases with a properly written check.

We would like to say thank you to The Portland Foundation for giving us this grant and also thank The First National Bank. The First National Bank allowed us to tour their bank. Several of their employees were gracious enough to take time out of their daily schedule and talk with the students about the operation of the bank. At Exchange City, the students from the academy operated the bank and the distribution center, which is a wholesale business.

As their teacher, I know that this was a very enriching experience because of the feedback that the students gave me during our class discussion after returning from Exchange City.

Thank you again for this great experience.

Mrs. Kristine Wolford,

for the 4th-6th grade classes,
