Upset by greeting on new center (6/30/05)

Letters to the Editor

By To the editor:-

Concerning the new building, the Community Resource Center. A wonderful idea, housing five different offices in one building.

When I drove by after the printing was on the door, I was shocked and was in a very dismal mood the remainder of the afternoon. The reason, in Portland? Foreign language on a community building. The more I thought about it, the more mad I became.

I have always had a lot of respect for the owner of the building. But whoever made the decision to have that printed I thought was a bad decision. Somewhere, we the taxpayer will be paying for the occupancy of that building. As Andy Rooney says, “This is a bunch of horse manure.”

Being a Korea veteran (1950-51), I do not remember any doors that had English printed on them. Yet, down the street south one block we are constructing Freedom Park to honor all veterans — another wonderful addition to our city. Recognizing their service to the United States of American in peace and war.

I wonder how many doors in Iraq have a welcome sign on their entrance door. I wonder what our young men and women are honestly thinking about this. As of June 21, the latest figures that I have on the casualties from Iraq, there have been 1,725 killed in action (including 36 women) and 13,075 wounded in action. Our leaders in Washington, D.C. made a very bad decision on going to Iraq for the reason that they gave. I am, and was, against the invasion. But I will stand behind our troops.

They say our Social Security is going broke. But they do not tell you why. The latest figures that I have is that the fund has an excess of $1.5 trillion in IOUs to the federal government. And also they do not tell you how much money that was removed from that fund for our costs in Iraq — in the billions.

A nation of immigrants, yet we were taught to speak English. And we must continue to demand that our nation continues to speak English as our language.

Freedom is not free. Today, we have to stand up for it.

And I would like to add that as of today, I will never enter a government building in Portland that has foreign language on the front door.

May you all have a safe and wonderful Fourth of July.

Fredrick Franks
