Use safety this week
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
The tractor and engine show is here again and traffic is at its peak. Cars and golf carts are bumper to bumper and pedestrians are trying to walk between them. Defensive driving is a requirement to navigate the streets of Portland.
The Portland Police Department makes public safety a priority everyday of the year. We have a golf cart ordinance in our community and enforce this law in the most professional, responsible and fair manner in the interest of public safety and safeguarding all citizens in our community.
The golf cart ordinance provides a privilege that allows cost savings and enjoyment of our festivities. But we must remember that with any privilege comes responsibility.
Everyone must obey all traffic laws and watch out for the other guy to make this week safe for all. Operators of golf carts can drive on city streets but must stay off state highways. All drivers of golf carts must have a valid driver’s license and obey all traffic laws. The slow moving vehicle sign must be posted on the rear of the golf cart.
A copy of the complete ordinance may be found on the City of Portland’s web site at www.thecityof portland.net/police.
The Portland Police Department hopes that everyone enjoys the show this week.
