Vacant sites will be marketed (4/7/04)
JCDC director sees positive in vacancies
Although it’s tough to see any employers leave, having available industrial sites available can be a positive, the head of a local economic development group said Tuesday.
Robert Quadrozzi, executive director of Jay County Development Corporation, told members of his board that although no one is happy that Berne Apparel Co. is leaving Portland, having another potential site to show site shoppers is nice — especially with the current high cost of steel making new construction costly.
Berne Apparel, located in the former Jay Garment plant on North Wayne Street, will cease local operations by mid-May as it consolidates in a new distribution center in New Haven.
Other vacant industrial buildings in Portland include the west plant for O-Cedar Vining, and the 50,000-square foot (Continued on page 9)

spec building in the Portland Industrial Park along county road 100 North.
Also Tuesday, board members were reminded that the annual JCDC Industrial Appreciation Dinner will be held Wednesday, May 12 at Portland Country Club. Economist Morton Marcus, whose weekly column is published by The Commercial Review, will be the featured speaker.
In other business, JCDC board members:
•Heard Jay County community developer Wayne Bailey give an update on his recent activities, including the recent awarding of a $30,000 grant to Pennville for completion of a comprehensive plan. That plan is a requirement before zoning laws can be adopted. The grant was awarded by the Indiana Department of Commerce.
•Learned from Jack Moore of Sprint that the company’s high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet connection service in Jay County will expand. DSL will be offered in Pennville and in areas south of Portland by sometime this summer, Moore said.
•Were reminded by member Vicki Tague, the executive director of the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce, that the chamber’s business exposition will be held May 1 and 2 at East Jay Middle School.
•Met new member Joe Johnston, who is the chief executive officer of Jay County Hospital.[[In-content Ad]]
