Vagedes 2nd in long jump

FRHS track

MINSTER, Ohio - Aaron Vagedes finished as a runner-up, and Holly Brunswick advanced to the regional tournament in a pair of events on the first day of the Division III district track tournament Thursday.

Brunswick led the Fort Recovery High School girls to a 20-point effort on day one, placing them fourth in the 15-team field. Marion Local leads with 31.

The Tribe boys scored 12 points and are eighth out of 14 teams. Host Minster stands in first place with 38 at the meet, in which the top four competitors in each event advance to the regional competition.

Vagedes narrowly missed winning the district long jump title as he turned in a leap of 19 feet, 8 inches. He was just one-quarter inch behind champion Nathan Turnwald of Ottoville.

The sophomore also qualified for Saturday's finals in the 200-meter dash as the No. 8 seed in 24.65 seconds.

Brunswick was one of three athletes to clear the high jump bar at 5 feet, 2 inches, but finished third because she had more misses throughout the competition. Taylor Vail of Antwerp took the title.

The FRHS junior turned in a leap of 15 feet, 6 ¼ inches in the long jump to finish in third place, less than three inches behind champion Tara Luth of Parkway.

Brunswick also earned the No. 3 seed for Saturday's finals in the 200 dash in 16.95.

Two other Indians narrowly missed picking up regional berths in the shot put. Kylie Kahlig was fifth by just three-quarters of an inch in the girls competition at 34 feet, ½ inch, and Mark Mattraw finished fifth in the boys competition by just four inches at 45 feet, 3 inches.

Fort Recovery also finished fifth in the 4x800 relay in 10 minutes, 52.34 seconds.
