FRHS track

Matt Vagedes saved his breakout for the right day.

Vagedes set a new Fort Recovery school record in the pole vault Tuesday evening and remained the only Indian to earn a Midwest Athletic Conference championship when the meet was completed Friday.

Fort Recovery's boys finished last in the 10-team meet at New Bremen despite the title from Vagedes as they scored 14 points. St. Henry won with 128.5 points, and Coldwater was second with 107.

The Indian girls were eighth with 37.5 points, while Versailles won with 121.5 and St. John's was second with 96.

Vagedes shattered his own school record in the pole vault by 18 inches, winning the MAC title at 13 feet, 6 inches. Marion Local's Dustin Heitkamp was second at 12 feet, 6 inches.

Sophomore Anne Koesters turned in the top effort for the Tribe girls with by far her best career throw in the discus. She edged senior teammate Holly Stein, a 2006 state qualifier in the event, for the runner-up spot at 108 feet 21/2 inches. Stein followed in third at 108 feet, 1 inch.

The only other top-three finish for Fort Recovery's girls also came from Stein. The two-time defending champion in the shot put placed third at 37 feet, 61/4 inches.[[In-content Ad]]
