VanSkyock, Tobe key another thriller (01/31/05)

FRHS boys basketball

NEW PARIS, Ohio — Apparently last Friday nights buzzer beater wasn’t exciting enough.

The Indians, who defeated Marion Local last week on a 3-pointer by Travis VanSkyock with four seconds left, are getting quite the knack for late-game heroics. They got them twice Saturday as Clint Tobe scored at the end of regulation and VanSkyock came up with another game-winner at the end of overtime as the Fort Recovery boys basketball team edged the National Trail Blazers 62-60.

The game was tied on 15 different occasions, including at 60 apiece after a couple of free throws by National Trail’s Ricky Kerns tied the game with 26 seconds to play in overtime. But, VanSkyock was ready for another big shot, hit a jumper with two seconds left which gave the Tribe the victory. The Indians, now 10-5, never trailed in the extra session.

VanSkyock’s shot was only possible after Tobe, a freshman, came up big at the end of regulation.

Fort Recovery was down 54-51 after Josh Unger hit a pair of fouls hots for the Blazers (11-5) with just seven seconds remaining. The Indians didn’t waste any time, with senior point guard Greg Faller passing to Tobe for a game-tying 3-pointer with four seconds left.

Tobe and VanSkyock scored the most important points as they were two of the Tribe’s four players in double figures. Dusty Tobe paced the Indians with 13 points, VanSkyock and Sean Kahlig each had 12 and Clint Tobe (3-of-4 from 3-point range) added 11.

Greg Faller just missed double digits as he finished with nine points, six assists and three steals. Tyler Wuebker grabbed five rebounds, Dusty Tobe and VanSkyock each had four, and Clint Tobe notched three steals.

The game was close most of the way, with National Trail’s biggest lead at three points. Fort Recovery led by two at the half and was up by as many as eight in the third quarter only to be outscored 19-14 in the final period as the Blazers forced overtime.

National Trail got 14 points from Tim Beck. Kerns had a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three assists, two steals and one block.

Justin Boggs had nine points, and Josh Unger and Andy Blevins each added eight.

Fort Recovery dominated the second and fourth quarters for a 52-36 JV victory over National Trail.

The Tribe trailed 11-9 at the quarter, but surged ahead by seven at the half. They were still up seven with one quarter to play and put the game away with a 20-point final period.

Tyler Thobe had a team-high 13 points for the Indians. Bobby Rammel added 10 points, five steals and two rebounds.

Matt Thobe scored nine points, and Luke Bihn had eight points and nine rebounds. Tony Diller had five boards, Curt Heitkamp dished out four assists, and Thobe added three steals.

Kevin Brower finished with 15 points and four rebounds for the Blazers. No other National Trail player had more than four points.[[In-content Ad]]
