FRHS boys basketball
FORT RECOVERY — A close game that threatened to get ugly coming down the stretch turned out just fine for the home team, thanks to a clutch shot in the closing seconds.
Host Fort Recovery, which held onto the ball for nearly two minutes with the score tied and the clock winding down Friday night against Marion Local, got a go-ahead 3-pointer from Travis VanSkyock with six seconds to play Friday at Fort Site Fieldhouse in a 46-42 win.
The Indians, who had managed just two points in a crucial four-plus minute span of the fourth period, forced a turnover by the Flyers following VanSkyock’s clutch shot, and Greg Faller hit the first of two free throws with less than a second left to play for the final margin.
Faller missed the second free throw attempt, and time ran out as Marion Local grabbed the rebound.
The dramatic final seconds allowed the Indians to salvage a victory they had looked to score comfortably early in the fourth period, as they surged ahead by as many as eight points.
Dusty Tobe was the most consistent offensive threat for either team, sinking 4-of-7 3-point shots on his way to a game-high 19 points.
VanSkyock added 10 (2-for-5 from 3-range) for the Indians, who were 7-of-19 from behind the 3-point line as a team.
Marion Local, which tied the game with 2:56 left to play on a jump shot by John Alexander, got 13 points from Curtis Moeller Friday night, with Alexander contributing 11.
After Alexander knotted the score at 42, the teams traded a series of missed shots and turnovers.
When the Indians got the ball back with a little less than two minutes to play after a missed shot by the Flyers, Fort coach Brian Patch decided to hold the ball for the last shot.
As the clock ticked under 10 seconds, Tobe passed to VanSkyock, who put up the winning shot.
Fort Recovery, which led 31-25 heading into the fourth quarter Friday, also got eight points from Sean Kahlig. VanSkyock and Tyler Wuebker each pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Shaky shooting from the free throw line allowed Marion Local to stay close. The host Indians, who were 7-for-17 from the line in the game, were a solid 5-for-7 in the fourth quarter.
Fort was 44 percent overall from the field in the game.
Marion Local recovered from a horrendous first-half shooting performance in which it hit just 18 percent (5-of-28) of its shots, including 0-for-10 from behind the 3-point line.
In the second half the Flyers were 5-for-7 from 3-point range.
