Vogel 1st for Indians (09/10/07)
Fort Recovery cross country
SPENCERVILLE, Ohio - Mindy Vogel and Tina Roessner beat the Bearcats, but that wasn't quite enough.
Vogel took the title at Saturday's Spencerville Invitational and Tina Roessner finished in fourth place to lead the Fort Recovery High School girls cross country team to a second-place finish with 68 points.
The host Bearcats placed all of its top-five runners in the top 21 in the 12-team field to score 57 points and grab the victory. Ottoville was third with 77 points.
The Tribe boys were 12th out of 16 teams with 339 points, 15 behind 11th-place Parkway and two ahead of 13th-place Botkins. Lehman Catholic won with 60 points, and New Bremen (78) was second.
Vogel picked up her first win of the year for the Indians as she was one of two runners to break the 20-minute mark. She crossed the finish line in 19-minutes, 48.8 seconds, nearly six seconds ahead of Ottoville freshman Shayla Siefker.
Roessner also finished ahead of every runner from champion Spencerville in a solid fourth place. She recorded a time of 20:53, a full 13 seconds in front of Bearcat No. 1 runner Lyndie Brown.
However, Brown's teammates followed in seventh, 12th, 14th and 21st for the team victory.
Fort Recovery added one more runner in the top 20 with Abby Huelskamp turning in her best race of the year. After finished in the No. 5 slot for the Indians in the first few meets of the year, the freshman surged to third on the team and 20th overall in 22:38.
Senior Sam Bihn finished 23rd in 22:59, and sophomore Amber Heitkamp took 26th at 23:22.
Ryan Heitkamp had the top finish for the all-freshman Indian boys team at 37th in 19:05. Caleb Heitkamp followed in 46th with a time of 19:28.
Alan Vogel took 66th for Fort Recovery in 20:19, Aaron Will was 98th in 23:48 and Zach Guggenbiller finished 103rd in 24:25.
Also running for the Indian girls team were Alexis Sutter (34th - 23:52), Casey Backs (47th - 24:41), Abby Sudhoff (48th - 24:43), Kelly Wendel (61st - 25:25), Hilary Pottkotter (62nd - 25:26), Alison Tobe (71st - 26:22) and Tami Link (100th - 30:05).

Fort Recovery's boys team turned in a solid finish, taking sixth among 19 teams with 193 points. Shawnee won with 66 points.
The Tribe girls had 211 points to place ninth among 17 teams. Covington placed first with 77.
Nathan Fullenkamp and Mathias Koester went back-to-back to lead the Fort Recovery boys. Fullenkamp placed 14th in 12:32, and Mathias Koester was just two seconds behind him in 15th.
Derek Rammel finished 52nd at 13:35, Adam Pohl was 79th with a time of 14:15, and Calvin Kaiser placed 84th in 14:26.
Nicole Heitkamp's 16th-place finish was best for the Tribe girls as she posted a time of 13:52. Samantha Tobe was 31st in 14:14, and Christen Wendel took 39th at 14:36.
