Cori Vormohr holds seven school records.

She made four state finals appearances.

She's the only Patriot to hold a Jay County High School pool record.

And she's the only JCHS female to ever break the 1-minute mark in an event other than the freestyle.

Her list of accomplishments goes on and on. Those accolades have helped give her the opportunity to compete at the Division I level.

Vormohr recently committed to continue her swimming career next season at Ball State University.

"I think the (Mid-American Conference), Ball State in particular, is a great fit for Cori," said Jay County coach Matt Slavik. "I think she's got a lot of untapped potential to really compete in Division I. She's going to have a lot of girls who are going to be pushing her, as opposed to her pushing everybody here ..."

Vormohr will continue swimming her two best events, the 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke, for the Cardinals. She said she might also be involved in the 200 freestyle.

She said familiarity with the Ball State program was a key as she made her college choice.

"I've known (BSU coaches) Bob (Thomas) and Laura (Seibold-Caudill) for a long time," Vormohr said. "I've competed at their pool and I'm just comfortable there.

"I'm hoping to be competitive on the team and be able to compete in the MAC."

Vormohr was been the undisputed leader of the Patriots for all of her high school years, and led one of the best seasons in school history as a senior.

The Patriots won the Olympic Athletic Conference championship for the first time. And their second-place finish in the sectional meet matched the best in school history.

JCHS also picked up 10 victories, the most in nearly a decade.

"Cori's just been a phenomenal leader," added Slavik. "Her talent level speaks for itself. ... Her leadership is just second-to-none. ... She's probably the strongest leader that I've had the opportunity to coach."

Vormohr broke record after record as she grew up in the water with the Jay County Summer Swim Team, and she continued that pattern with the Patriots.

Of her seven school records, five are of the individual variety. She is the best swimmer in school history in the 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle.

As a senior, she joined junior Michelle Landfair and freshmen Eme Miller and Mary Hudson setting school marks in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

"I'm most proud of being OAC champions as a team my senior year," said Vormohr, putting the team accomplishment ahead of her own. "Also, going to state my junior and senior year. And our relay records."

Her breaststroke record, which she set in her final swim in her home pool, is also a sectional and pool record. She is the only Jay County swimmer, female or male, to own a JCHS pool record in a swimming event.

Vormohr also holds the distinction of being the only female swimmer in Patriot history to make the 50-second club in an event other than the freestyle. Her 100 butterfly school record is 59.89.

She made state finals appearances in both the butterfly and breaststroke in each of her final two seasons, placing 25th in the state in the latter in 2008. Her school breaststroke record came in the 2008 state finals, and her butterfly record was at the 2009 state meet.

"She left a great career with seven team records," said Slavik. "That's just an amazing feat in any sport."[[In-content Ad]]
