Vote in spite of realities
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
This morning as I listened to the news I found that the candidates for the election have been chosen and they are Obama and Romney. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth not because of who they are but the fact that Indiana has not yet voted. Does this cause anyone besides me to think that Indiana is not important in the choosing of the leaders of our country. I believe it is still three weeks before we go to the polls, and the message is that it has been decided and Indiana needs to fall in line and vote for the man that has been chosen.
If you are not upset because no one cares what you think or do. Does the fact that now huge campaign funds will not be spent in Indiana to try to influence our vote. I would think that this loss of money alone would be a factor in moving the primary to an earlier date.
This situation in which we find ourselves, I believe, is one of the reasons people do not get involved in the election process and do not go to vote. When you look at the numbers of people that could vote and those that actually do, you see that this country is run by a very small percentage of the population. You have heard the remarks, "My vote does not count", "Who cares what I think", "No matter how we vote it will be decided in some back room somewhere", "There is so much voter fraudulence (ballot box stuffing, dead people voting, those that vote early and vote often) so I am staying home".
Do I have an answer for all this? No!
I will however do as I have done since I became old enough to vote (I am now 72). I will exercise this wonderous freedom that we have here in the United States of America and I will go to the polls and vote my choice for each and every office on the ballot. Then by so doing I reserve the right to complain if the outcome was not of my choosing or brag about how the country is being run by my choice at the ballot box.
So I say to all of you if you do not vote do not waste my time complaining how the country is being run. Get out of the house and go vote!
Sincerely
