Voter supports Obama (10/09/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

After reading Jack's editorial of Oct. 6, I had to respond to all of those Republicans who have voted their ticket for so many years. I hear some of you saying, "I'm just afraid to vote for Obama."

Why? Is it because of all of those e-mails you've received from cyberspace that are filled with half-truths, partial quotes from his books, and many times, out and out stories meant to scare you? Is it his middle name? Is it because he's multi-ethnic? Is it because you listen to the poison that Rush Limbo spews daily. Yes ... limbo! Anyone who listens and worships Rush is in Sourgrapes Limbo. Believe me, that man has made millions off of dazed followers like you. Do you think Rush and the other right wing radio guys are funny? They are trying to get rich at your expense.

Now, do I sound a little bitter? I'm not really. I'm just one of those Democrats who has been called a fool for believing that war isn't the way to make peace and that you should help your fellow man. If that makes me liberal, then so be it.  I'm not afraid to vote for Obama. In fact, I believe you should shed your fear and vote for him too.

He's thoughtful, well-educated at Harvard graduating with honors, raised by solid middle class people in the Midwest, served his country by helping those in need who lost jobs and income in Chicago, and has served his country in the Illinois Senate, plus representing his state in Washington. Don't be afraid of Obama. Throw caution to the wind this time. Vote for change we can believe in. It's ok!!!

 A thought

To the editor:

A little food for thought. "The Department of Energy estimates that, even if Congress removed all restrictions on offshore drilling, the impact on global oil prices would be 'insignificant'." U.S. News and World Report, Aug. 18-25, 2008.

Please help

To the editor:

We hear about crimes committed against innocent folks. We pray that they survive. We gossip and ask, "Did they catch the criminal yet?" We pass information along that might help catch this criminal.

But does anyone think about the medical bills inflicted on the innocent? How do they pay for an ambulance ride, lifeline helicopter ride, intensive/critical care, and recovery bills - as well as the dental, eye or plastic surgery bills? What if they have no insurance?

Recently a good friend of mine, Alisha Flowers, was beaten and left for dead. She suffered broken eye sockets, nose, cheekbones and jaw, as well as numerous defensive fractures and deep gashes. She has lacerations in multiple places about the head and face. There are injuries to her eye and ear. She will need plastic, dental and eye surgery, along with reconstructive surgery. Now the kicker: She has no insurance.

You cant' receive medical treatment without a payment of some sort. They ask for money up front. She is not eligible for state healthcare. What is she to do? How do you take care of a baby and an elementary age child, pay for ridiculous medical bills, take care of everyday household bills, and heal the way she needs? Over $45,000 for her medical bills (so far) for a criminal act against her.

If she doesn't get the medical assistance and care she needs now, she may face being deaf in one ear, eyesight disrupted, and facial scarring and broken teeth. Let along the bones in her face healing wrong.

The Jay County Trail Riders Association has pulled together a fund-raising trail ride and hog roast on Saturday, Oct. 19. For more information contact Becky Paxson (765) 578-0317, Carol Stocker (260) 251-0371, Jill Hall (260) 726-7142, or Rhonda Short (260) 251-0812 after 5 p.m. The amount of funds raised will only be a drop in the bucket.

She will need more than what we as friends can give her. We are there to support her through this difficult and shocking time.

Imagine you or your loved one in this situation. What would you do if you had to deal with the horror of it and the lasting scars? Imagine the pain and the psychological trauma. Not knowing why this was done.

Imagine not being able to eat properly for weeks or months because your jaw is broken and not wired. Imagine a sneeze feeling like a bomb went off in your face and not being able to weep because that hurts even worse. Then slapped with a bill that the medical community charges outlandishly for. What would you do?

I don't know what I would do. I don't know if I would have survived such an ordeal.

She is a very strong person.

I ask you this: Where can she get the help she needs for the bills and the continuing medical needs? If you can give some assistance to Alisha, or want to participate in the fundraisers, please call me.
