Voters weigh in on election (10/27/06)

Letters to the Editor

(Editor's note: Letters regarding the upcoming election must be received at The Commercial Review by noon on Monday. Those letters will be published on or before Thursday, Nov. 2).

To the editor:

We have less than two weeks until the election. I hope you are following the issues and how they affect your life. My vote for state representative will go for a man who will do the right thing because it's the kind of person he is. Sometimes the votes are tough and take soul-searching.

Issues could arise in the future that we have never faced before. We need a representative in the 33rd district who would be capable of handling it and do what is right in such circumstances.

I have a quote on my refrigerator that says, "Do what is right; it will please some and surprise many." It surprises many because people are not used to those who consistently do what is right. The votes Bill Davis cast in the last two years were not based on pleasing or surprising, but because deep in his heart he believed it was the right vote for our district.

Bill served his community all his adult life. At a time when he could slow down, travel and enjoy his grandchildren, he is still serving. Two years ago he and Mary were on vacation in Florida when our county chairman called and convinced him to come home and run.

I have never seen a couple work harder than Bill and Mary. It's not surprising that they attract so many volunteers. Whatever we do, it's a team effort. Several of us helping with his campaign could also take life easier, but we believe it is so important for the future of our grandchildren that we feel compelled to stuff envelopes, walk in parades and go door-to-door.

We trust him to vote with our values on life issues and keeping marriage between one man and one woman. Are these issues important to you?

His vote on Major Moves reflected his opinion that it was best for Indiana, not because Gov. Daniels wanted his vote. He may not always vote with the governor, but he will when he feels it is right.

We need to keep Bill because he has the character for the position. We don't know what we will have to face in the next two years, but with men like Bill in office I have confidence he will do what is right - every time.

Clear choice

To the editor:

This Nov. 7 in the election for Congressman for Indiana's 6th District, the choice is clear: Democratic candidate Barry Welsh.

Mr. Welsh is a life-long resident of Eastern Indiana and knows the concerns of his fellow citizens. Barry has traveled all 19 counties in the district conducting a grassroots campaign for the last 18 months.

It's time for a change in Washington, D.C. It's time for common sense. Let's send Barry to Congress.

Key election

To the editor:

The current pro-business state Legislature has done some remarkable work over the past two years. The state's long-term transportation and infrastructure plan is already sparking increased economic development in many Indiana areas and has gained national acclaim for the much-needed resources it has and will generate.

On the efficiency front, enabling legislation for local government consolidation and reorganization is now on the table - available for every Hoosier community to consider for increased fiscal fitness and delivery of services.

Meanwhile, Indiana is in a better position to compete for business relocation and expansion for years to come thanks to a more attractive and extensive economic toolkit. Couple this with aggressive action by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and the result has been encouraging: Nearly $7 billion in private capital investment and 33,000 new jobs coming to the state.

None of this would have been possible without the support of legislators willing to make bold decisions and think of our economic future. Whether the state continues to make the kind of leapfrog economic progress of the past two years hinges on the outcome of this fall's legislative elections.

The Indiana Chamber, through our political action committee, aggressively supports legislators who enable Indiana businesses to thrive. We provide this support knowing that what's good for business is ultimately good for the economy and jobs. As the economy improves, so does the quality of life for all Hoosiers.

Last election, the 10 closest House races were decided by an average margin of only 235 votes. With even more close contests expected this year, every vote will count.

Please let your voice be heard and vote to continue our pro-business, pro-Indiana growth agenda on November 7.

An analysis of each legislator's pro-business voting record is available at indianachamber.com.
