Wait begins on N. Corydon grant (10/21/03)
Application for flood mitigation grant has been submitted
The wait for federal money to help ease problems with flooding in New Corydon has begun.
Tami Mann, director of Jay County Emergency Management Agency, told Jay County Commissioners Monday that an application for a flood mitigation grant has been sent to state officials.
The grant, which would be controlled by a local board that would likely include the commissioners, could be used in a variety of ways — including the possible purchase of homes that would be torn down and used for green space that would be allowed to flood when the Wabash River rises.
Other options if the grant is approved would include raising homes above the flood plain or relocating homes.
An official with the Indiana State Emergency Management Agency met with commissioners and residents of New Corydon in August regarding the grant program.
Jan Crider, a hazard mitigation specialist from SEMA, said that the cost/benefit ratio in a successful grant application is $1.50 in damage for each $1 awarded in the grant.
Mann completed the majority of the work on the application, sending surveys to all New Corydon residents.
Mann said last month that the large majority of residents indicated they would participate in a buy-out program if they were eligible.
Also Monday, Commissioners Gary Theurer, Mike Leonhard and Milo Miller Jr. reviewed quotes for the purchase of two new cruisers for the sheriff’s department.
Jay County Sheriff Todd Penrod will review and compare the quotes and make a recommendation to the commissioners next week.
Penrod plans to trade-in two 1999 Ford Crown Victorias.
A quote on two Chevrolet Impalas was received from Ken Kunkle Chevrolet Cadillac, Portland. Submitting quotes for Crown Victorias were Les Wenning, Fort Recovery; Moser Motor Sales, Berne; and Fincannon Ford, Hartford City.
In other business Monday, Jay County Commissioners:
•Gave county highway superintendent Robert Sours permission to develop bid specifications and advertise for a new tandem axle dump truck. Bids will be opened on Nov. 17.[[In-content Ad]]
