Walgreens eyes Portland location (12/07/07)
Portland Planning Commission

Portland may be getting another retail store and pharmacy.
Walgreens is considering building a store in the 100 block of West McNeal Street, between CVS and Village Pantry.
A group representing property owners in the area was scheduled Thursday to ask the Portland Planning Commission for a map change/rezoning request for three parcels along North Meridian and West McNeal streets.
The request would rezone the properties as neighborhood business from its current R-4 residential status. Some of the property eyed for the project is already zoned properly, one of the petitioners said this morning.
A legal notice for the planning commission meeting said that the rezoning was for three parcels - at 113, 123 and 129 West McNeal Street. Those properties are all on the south side of McNeal, west of Meridian Street.
Details of the plans, including whether it would include frontage on Meridian Street, are unclear.
Bill Milligan, director of Jay/Portland Building and Planning, denied a request by The Commercial Review for copies of the petition and related documents this morning. The documents are public records under Indiana law.
If the documents are not made available within time constraints specified by Indiana law, a complaint will be filed with the Indiana Public Access Counselor.
Milligan confirmed Thursday the change would be for a new Walgreens, and a Portland woman who owns property in the area said details could be available in the next week.
Commission member Judy Aker said the group representing the property owners asked that the request be continued until the Jan. 3 commission meeting.
The planning commission voted to table the matter. Aker said after Thursday's meeting that group was not ready to make a presentation.
"(The request is) for the Walgreens?" asked commission member Tom Kennedy.
"Yes," said Milligan.
The Faigus Group would develop the project, he said.
Those listed as petitioners for the re-zoning request are Larry W. and Sandy L. Bubp, Rayma L. Frankenfield and Carolyn J. Huey.
"It will be a big project," Sandy Bubp said this morning, confirming that the group hopes to build a Walgreens pharmacy. Bubp also confirmed that the Walgreens would be located in the 100 block of West McNeal Street, but declined to elaborate on how the store would be sited.
Bubp said she would be able to release more details in a few days. Some of the property that could be used for the project is already zoned appropriately for the project, she said.
The petitioners all own property in the area eyed for the project, Bubp said.
Also Thursday, board members voted to allow Milligan to proceed with making the printed form of the city zoning ordinance more reader-friendly.
Milligan said he is adding tabs and eliminating some of the tables.
"It looks much simpler, much easier to follow," said commission member Dolphus Stephens. Milligan said he expects to give the new books to commission members in January.[[In-content Ad]]
