Walk Against Cancer is Saturday (06/20/06)

The 2006 Walk Against Cancer will take place Saturday at the Jay County High School track.

The annual event, to raise awareness and support for the Jay County Cancer Society, will begin with a survivors dinner from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Registration for the walk begins at 7 p.m. and the opening ceremony is at 8 p.m.

Other activities will be a car show from 6 to 9 p.m., with registration from 5 to 6; a moon walk and kids games from 7 to 9 p.m.; concessions will be sold from 6:30 to 9 p.m.; and a luminary ceremony begins at 9:15 p.m. Candles to be lit, in someone’s honor, may be purchased for a $10 donation.

The event is sponsored by Alphabet, Delta Theta Tau, Hartzell Fan Inc., Jay County Cancer Society, Jay County Hospital and Knights of Columbus.

Honor roll

Fort Recovery High School recently announced the honor roll for the fourth quarter for the 2005-06 school year.

Earning all A’s in ninth grade were Andrea Faller, Chris Gehret, Brady Kahlig, Anne Koesters, Tina Roessner, Joanna Snyder, Kelly Sudhoff, Rachel Tobe, Kinsey Wenning and Kelsey Weubker.

Looking for students

Arts Place is looking for students to participate in the free “Make A Mural” classes to be held Friday, July 14 through Friday, July 28.

Check the registration brochure for dates and times. Those brochures are available at Arts Place and other community location.

Individuals may mail or bring in their registration forms to Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St., Portland.

The multi-day workshop, taught by West Terre Haute artist, Amy MacLennan, offers students the opportunity to design and create a giant mural from the initial brainstorming to painting the project. The finished work will be display at Arts Place.

Receive honors

Students at Ball State University have recently been named to the 2006 spring semester dean’s list.

From Geneva was Casey Genis; from Bryant was Adam Homan, David Knoth, Brittany Pinkerton, and Brittani Roll.

Students from Dunkirk were Brent Caldwell, Corinne Erwin, Drake Hatch, Ryan Hornbaker, Sheana Murphy, Lonnie Ward, Ryan Wenger, and Nicole Whitesell.

Portland residents were Abigail Arnold, Erin Arnold, Robin Bisel, Jaime Comstock, Jarred Corwin, Cynthia Crooks, Ashley DeWitt, Nicholas Ehrhart, Gary Gibson, Matthew Knipp, Angela Miller, Michelle Newton, William Saxman, Darrell Upp, and Howard Wickelman.

Redkey resident, Kristin Janak was also named to the list, as was Brittany Ullom of Ridgeville.

On Cedarville list

Jonathan Wolverton, son of Lucinda Wolverton, Portland, has been named to the Cedarville University dean’s list for the 2006 Spring semester. He is a freshman at Cedarville, majoring in psychology.

Rocket workshop

Jay County 4-H will have a rocketry workshop on Saturday, beginning at noon. For more information, call the Jay County Extension Office at (260) 726-4764.

Field day

The Jay County Amateur Ham Radio Club will participate in a world wide ham radio field day on Saturday and Sunday at the Robert Avey farm, 2371 West 300 North, Portland. Ham radio equipment will be operated with portable generators.

The event begins at 1 p.m. and the public is invited.

Dean’s list

David Johnston, son of Richard and Patricia Johnston of Portland, and Alex Loucks, son of Ramon and LaVetha Loucks, Portland, have made the dean’s list at Wabash College in Crawfordsville. Both are sophomores.[[In-content Ad]]
