Walk Against Cancer set (06/07/07)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

Join us for the 2007 Walk Against Cancer on Saturday, June 23 at Jay County High School. Rain or shine, we will be walking to raise money for the Jay County Cancer Society. The Jay County Cancer Society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County to help ease the burden of costs related to treatments, prescriptions, prosthetics, etc.

The society does not have any paid employees. We are a group of dedicated volunteers, which allows us to keep expenses to a minimum, meaning that every dollar raised virtually goes directly to someone in need.

Activities will begin with a car show at 6 p.m. Also planned are a kids' area (7 to 9 p.m.), concession booth (6:30 to 9 p.m.), survivor dinner (6:30 p.m., reservations required by June 13), theme laps (8:15 to 9:15 p.m.) and luminary ceremony (9:15 p.m.) This year we will also have several vendor booths at the walk.

A thousand luminaries were lit last year in honor and memory of many cancer patients.

The scene was breathtaking and beautiful.

Flyers for the event are available at Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital, Strohl Appliance, MainSource Banks, and other local businesses.

The flyer is also available online at www.portlandchamber.jayco.net, and in an upcoming edition of The Commercial Review and The News and Sun (Dunkirk). The flyer has the times of all the events and a pledge sheet on the back of the flyer. Any walker who collects more than $100 will receive a free walk T-shirt while supplies last.

How can you help? There are many ways. Collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc. as pledges or for luminaries and keep track on the pledge sheet then bring the pledge sheet and money to the walk. Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf. Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible. Display the flyer in your place of business. Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church, or philanthropic group, and donate the funds raised to the walk.

The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless.

We would like to thank all the sponsors who make this event possible: Hartzell Fan, Alphabet, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Jay County Knights of Columbus, Mayor Bruce Hosier's 2007 Charity Golf Outing, MainSource Bank, Jay County Hospital, Family Worship Center, Portland Eye Center, Portland Place Apartments, Alpha Delta Gamma Nu, and the Immaculate Conception Altar Rosary Society.

Walkers may also participate in the Jay County Walks One Million Miles campaign.

Just sign up at the table by the track, count your laps, and turn them in at the end of the evening. Each lap helps us to reach the goal of a million miles.

If you would like to volunteer at the walk or need additional information, please contact us at (260) 726-8110 and leave a message.

Anybody can make donations at the walk or to the Jay County Cancer Society, P.O. Box 614, Portland, IN, 47371.

We look forward to seeing you on the evening of June 23 to once again celebrate the lives of those with cancer and remember those who have left us for a better place.

Thank you,

Carolyn Carducci,

chairman, 2007 Walk
